The Cat Thread. (Kittens, Cats and misc felines.)
« on: October 26, 2013, 03:38:42 pm »

I searched for a 'cat thread' on this forums and all I found were some old old posts in the Happy thread.
So I decided to make one myself, since no one seem to have made one yet.

Same rules apply here as in the Happy, sad & rage threads.
Also, please restrain yourself from posting stuff about furries and/or catgirls as such threads usually end up in.. strange places.
I do not want to risk Toady bombarding this thread from orbit.

With that said.. I'll start out with something.

In this apartment where I live in, I do not think I am allowed to have any sort of pets.
However when I feel the need for some "cat/kitten therapy" (the need to be near cats (yeah I am a cat-person)), I can always visit my uncle and his family (they live in the same town).
They currently have three cats, one of whom is female and quite often seem to give birth at least once a year (we suspect one of her oldest kittens is the father.. yeah cats do that.).
They are Norwegian Forest Cats, which often seem to have an extra toe (or whatever they are called) for some reason.
An odd thing tough, they always seem to have only three cats, kittens born are usually given away and any other cat kept somehow ends up in a fatal accident as the cats often have a tendency to go outside, the minor highway nearby is the most likely cause (they live a bit outside the town).

edit: So I forgot to explain what the meaning of this cat thread is.. Just talk about cats in general, talk about various breeds, cats we own, or show vids and/or pictures of cats. Whatever you expect from a cat thread really.

Extra toes seems to be a really common genetic abnormality in cats for some reason. I really don't know why.

Yeah but that's a certain feature almost all Norwegian Forest Cats seem to have.

Polydactylism is the term. I've got a big ol' fattie cat and I'd have to say he was a maine coon. He's got the M on his head and the nice thick fur coat. He's really REALLY lazy. He lies in his cat bed ontop of the dryer and washer and stretch across to eat his food. I've seen it. He's pretty darn adorable and frisky even though he's at least ten years old.

I wish I had a cat... Not sure about the breed though, preferably a mix I guess. If I am going to get a pet I would prefer to know that a wide gene pool is going to be good for its health, rather than some people who I have never met consider it more pure by some arbitrary measure.

We currently have a calico that we took in from my brother's landlady's aunt. That owner had her declawed on both the front and rear paws, which is rather sad. She's gotten alarmingly vocal in the past few years, meowing loudly whenever she wants anything. She also does this thing where rather than bothering to run up the stairs to see if someone's up there, she'll yowl until someone responds, just so she doesn't waste the trip, presumably. Aside from that she's very good natured, and usually just wants someone to sit on.

My father has a black cat in Denver that's almost completely silent, which is a relief whenever I drive down there. It's easy to not notice him though, especially since I'm used to our cat going off like a proximity mine when you step within 5 feet of her.

Why did nobody make this sooner?

I can't think of anything super interesting to say, my three cats have been acting crazy all day, but that's normal.

They got to try a new brand of cat food today, so they're pretty excited.

Might as well chalk it up to Pathos.
As this point we might as well invoke interpretive dance and call it a day.

I have a big, fat, lazy cat called Felix. He likes rubbing our legs, sleeping and going outside to do whatever. He's not the kind of cat you can just pick up and cuddle, but he likes being petted anyway and generally won't attack (without warning).

Sadly, he also has cat aids since birth. He's about 7 and a half years old now. He doesn't really meow much at all, he just purrs loudly and yawns every now and then.

Pics soon :3

You mean he's infected with FIV, or something else? If so, :(

I have/had a female Persian (most likely mixed, actually). A bit of an ice queen, but she does show affection for people she likes. She also gets bouts of paranoia for no reason, when she starts staring at something in a fight-or-flight position, and whenever she hears a noise or sees a sudden movement, she breaks the sound barrier.

We are doomed. It's just that whatever is going to kill us all just happens to be, from a scientific standpoint, pretty frickin' awesome.

Satan.
His fur tends to look red or brown when light shines on it in a certain way. Idk why.

I'm going to guess it's either dirt, or light passing through a red lampshade or curtain.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.
