Above-ground Plants!
« on: October 25, 2013, 10:39:52 pm »

I'm having some trouble figuring out exactly how to use a lot of the new optional plants and stuff. So I wanted to try growing some onions, and carrots, and squash, and make a bunch of stew for my hard working little fellows. I also thought it would amuse me to has onion lasagna, onion tarts, onion dumplings... you get the idea. But I can't grow them. I buy seeds for stuff on embark, carrots, onions and the like, and there's just no option to grow them. Am I mistaken in thinking that I can at all? Am I just embarking to the wrong biome? And if not, why are there seeds that I can buy, but can't figure out how to jam in the ground and make prosper?

Having grown carrots and squash myself, I'm pretty sure it's a biome thing.

Can't say anything for this version but can confirm biome being main cause in earlier iterations of optional plants. If you can't grow the non-standard plants then biome is likely culprit.

Am i the only one who thinks it would be funny to try and replicate various random df meals in real life? Onion dumplings sounds like a good challenge :)

Alright then. A follow up question. What exactly is the correct biome for leeks, for onions, and for carrots and squash? Or where can I find this information?  And no, onion dumplings sound delicious, and I would totally make them.

I'd try grasslands and hills, maybe savannah. Since they're human plants, I imagine they should grow in areas that humans prefer to settle. Edit: Jungles and swamps might be a good bet too, since many of the "traditional" crops westerners are familiar with weren't actually available until after they were brought back to Europe from the Americas and Africa and domesticated there.

was just looking at that list and thinking it would benefit from going on the wiki in sortable format. Just can't figure out which page it should go on.

I looked through that file actually. I just somehow managed to miss the biome specifications. Anyway, back to making a fort that just consumes various preparations of leeks, carrots, and sweetpods.

able to be sorted? that's what defeats me every time I look at the list there, though the last time was several versions ago.
