More of less Leather
« on: October 25, 2013, 09:33:04 pm »

Are you tired of scrolling through 'endless' pages of different animal leather, chitin, scales, feathers, etc? Do you get upset when you want a leather bag made but instead get a chitinplate bag?

The following changes are what you are looking for. They are intended to remove all of the 'flavor' from leather, chitin, scales, feathers, shells, and a couple other things.

In the stockpile options for Leather you will only have the following items:
  Dragon Scale
  Suede
  Netherbark Leather
  Leather
  Rigid Chitinplate
  Rigid Shellplate
  Rigid Scaleplate
  Feather
  Fur
Stomach   <-- Was already in the list from, but lost within the huge list.
  Chitinplate
  Shellplate
  Scaleplate
  Bonerattle
  Tough Leather
  Studded Leather
  Lamellar Leather

Those will also be the only leather options when specifying the material for leather uniform items for your military.

If you use Workflow, you'll have an easier time finding the particular leather type that you want. (Currently, most of them are all under a nameless creature). Just start typing the name once you have gone into the Creature parent menu.

NOTE: As I'm typing this, I realize that suede is still hidden under a nameless creature, but it is the first nameless creature in the list, located about 28 pages down the list.

There's a lot of files to modify, so make a backup of the RAWS before you do this. Using Windows, I just use Explorer to search for the particular string that I need to change. There will be a few extra files listed that don't have what I'm actually looking for, but there won't be any files that are missed. I'm sure other tools and editors can also accomplish this.

Errors discovered in this material.  Use the link at the bottom of this post to get the RAWs directly.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Use this link to download the RAWs from DFFD.  They are based on a clean set of MW 4c RAWs.

On a side note: I've always wondered why I can embark with rigid scaleplate and tough leather but not rigid chitinplate, rigid shellplate, studded leather, or lamellar.

The reason is that none of the creatures available at embark can have their skins tanned directly into those missing leather types. They are only available as reaction products.

Next project: doing the same for other animal byproducts: milk, cheese, silk, globs (skin, fat, tallow), bones, shells, etc.  Basically want to remove the 'flavor' from all the items that are the same, regardless of the creature that they came from. Mostly because I know how, but fixing the Fat globs (skin, fat, tallow) is helpful so that you can have a Food stockpile near your Tanner that only accepts the skin globs used in tanning.

This is great, I have always want this, especially with those new animal added in DDD, their product list can go quite ridiculous for me to setup a proper stockpile.

You guys know DF hack has a implemented search option? The long list are not a issue anymore, but, good work you do by editing that big ass raw.

I wish you luck in your venture of standardizing leather, you are credit to the modding community by working hard to fix oversights to make a great mod even greater.

I personally think one of the most important parts of masterwork is removing the excess entries in the stockpile.

Send this to Mep, maybe he will implement it in the next release.

This is probably the hundrets time you call me Mep, not Meph. And I have seen this, thanks. :P

BillyJack: Nice work. Truly, well done. I'll certainly add these changes.

Sounds good.  Now give me a stockpile that only accepts generic leather.  Or tell your archers to use rigid chitinplate instead of the generic leather that you are using to clothe your citizens so that you can quite making clothes.

While on the subject, there isn't a search option in the military's uniform material menu, or the ability to specify that military dwarves should equip metal cloaks.

better dont take the "flavor" away from the milk.

because you would take out all the animal poisons that way.

Just because you milk a creature to get the poison doesn't mean its milk.

You don't understand the point.  If you wanted to create a stockpile that only stored milk, you would have to sort through the Extracts(animal) category either toggling on every milk, or toggling off everything else.

And this wouldn't really be something I'd likely do.

But making a stockpile to only hold the Skin globs to make them easier to tan, would be something to do.

Attempted to convert your instructions into my RAWs.  Noticed that the sections for Chitinplate, Scaleplate, Shellplate call only for changes in the reaction_masterwork.txt file and not reaction_kobold.txt file.  I assume same edits there for players of Kobold Camp and the 3 unique workshops that deal with those creature materials.

Also, with Kobolds in mind, do I still want to remove [CREATURE:ANIMAL_BONERATTLE] as bonerattle is an important leather for bolds?

You are correct and I've updated the listing.  Changes are bolded.

Don't remember why I picked the fake creature to remove instead of the other.  I guess I was just focused on Dwarf mode, since I've never played the other two.

Oh the other question I forgot:

Should          :SINEW:LEATHER_TEMPLATE] -->:SINEW:CREATURE_MAT:ANIMAL:LEATHER] be -->          :SINEW:LEATHER_TEMPLATE] -->:SINEW:CREATURE_MAT:ANIMAL_LEATHER:LEATHER].  Because there is now ANIMAL_LEATHER to reference now?

Thanks for putting this all together!
