School seems to be spying on me... more than most?
« on: October 25, 2013, 11:28:54 am »

I think i am being quite paranoid, but i think that the school is constantly watching my account on the system(more so than others), almost as if it entertains or interests them. A few strange things:

- Normally they delete any executable files, DLLs and related stuff on your account, but i have had my assembler and compiler as well as supporting libraries on my account for more than a year(quite interesting since the head of Computer Science/ICT said specifically that i can't use compilers in school)

- Anything that isn't work related is deleted as well(i felt it necessary to specifically refer to exes and dlls first) but i have about 1 mb of C and x86 assembly source files and manufacturer manuals(stuff from what i have heard they are scared of because of access to the machine, so if i wanted to and learned related stuff i could kill the entire network like something like CIH virus or Nimda), yet they haven't deleted it.

It is very interesting as all exes on my friends put on are auto deleted and one of my friends attempted Web dev stuff (not pure HTML, php, Cold Fusion etc.) and that was deleted within the week. What do you think is going on? I think i may just be being paranoid because i have a tendency of being paranoid when it comes to other people looking at my stuff.

Thanks for reading

Probably someone screwded up the auto deletion program or something. Honestly doubt they're sifting through all that by hand.

It's not uncommon to run across school software that doesn't work properly. Count your blessings, hope no one notices, and if they do notice hope they don't think it was your doing.

Either that or you're being considered for a top-secret government spy thingy that recruits by spying on high schoolers.

About the CIH virus, I doubt you could kill the entire network with that. There's something like it called bumerang that DOES spread over LAN. Not sure if it garbles the BIOS tough. Also runs on 98 or something. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWEd_c4RiBo

(Yes this is hardly relevant)

Well if you were lucky and were able to spread it quickly(through outlook) you could cause quite a bit of damage(say 30 PCs out of about 150, especially if those PCs were the servers). Although since we use XP I would need to either find or program an NT compatible version.

Because causing the already underfunded and stressed school system unnecessary pain is totally a great idea. Even better if you get expelled for doing it, or if they press charges and start throwing hacking laws at you that have a maximum sentence of 25 years! Oh boy, sure sounds fun.

Wow if I was an administrator and I overheard even part of a remark like that, I'd immediately start watching you pretty damn closely too...

Hah, this reminds me of the time I managed to find an unencrypted list of the ENTIRE SCHOOL PASSWORDS (minus the server passes) in mid highschool. They offered me 'amnesty' in exchange for me telling them how I did it.

it was a total accident, lol.

So we had this shortcut on our desktop called N:\Nethood, which allowed us access to certain programs that were stored on the network (Dreamweaver, Frontpage, Flash, VB Studio, stuff like that).
I was just poking around, pressed the Up-One-Level button, and found myself on the root of the drive. Various vaguely interesting folders were there, except there was an unencrypted, read-write, all users permissions, no password-protected file called 'passwords.csv'.

Open it up in Excel, jot down a coupla passwords and sell them off for use. I made a fair amount of money off it too!

So yeah, I literally just said "I pressed up one level from Nethood and it was sitting on the root of the drive, totally accessible." Needless to say, those IT guys were fired.

I view hacking a school as being similar to kicking an elderly person who is laying helplessly on the ground. It was effortless and required zero skill, and you have caused nothing but grief.

Remember, school networks. My friend brought down the school network back when I was at secondary school (so this happened like 8 years ago now, christ I'm only 22 but that still makes me feel old) just using emails. Seriously, a PHP script that was literally just an endless while loop and the mailto function managed to DDOS the school network and kill it.

Heh, good times, good times...

Ah, now I remember when someone in my school hacked the system. But, instead of doing damage, the got rid of the internet blocking. Cue everyone going to Facebook and screwing around.

Good times, good times...

What I don't think I made clear that i didn't intend to hack. I was simply providing reasons why they wouldn't want a C compiler and Assembler on a school user. I mostly use it for experimentation with libraries and free access to library books on the subject. It is just I found it strange that their scorched earth policy didn't touch my account for some reason.

School networks: ALWAYS BROKEN.

That's pretty much your explanation.
