Entertaining Guests
« on: October 23, 2013, 08:24:10 pm »

I searched for this and couldn't find anything other than stuff about inns and visiting nobles. Considering caravans and especially diplomats tend to come to the fortress and stay a long time, it'd make sense to have guest accomodations.

Perhaps certain sections of the fortress could be designated as guest accomodation with rooms, a dining room, food and drink stockpiles and whatever else you might want to add.

It would also make sense to have guest bedrooms for nobles and diplomats - this has been suggested before - and they would use the fortress as a normal dwarf.

Providing for your guests would improve diplomatic relations and for good and ill spread tales of the magnificience of your fortress or lack thereof.

Also, allowing visitors to stay comfortably might allow you to keep them for longer which would be useful if you're under siege or so.

It would also make sense to make certain doors locked to outsiders

I'd say taverns sound like this already?

Taverns are going to be the next step after this release, AFAIK.

This sounds less like taverns and more like the 'visiting dignitary quarters' you used to find in every castle worth its salt. Although for practical game purposes I don't know how much difference there would be.

However, I DO like the sound of being able to forbid parts of your fortress to outsiders! That way a diplomat can be confined to just the wing with the mayor/baron/duke's office in it, rather than following him everywhere. You can do it now with clever and well-timed use of forbidding doors, but automating it would be lovely.

What's wrong with using magma? That's almost always the easiest method.
I have issues channeling it properly to do that method. I end up flooding the fortress with magma.
Check out my RtD!

Oh ok I thought taverns would be only for adventurer mode. I also think doors should be lockable to civilians and allow only military but that's another suggestion altogether

Taverns have actually always been a fort mode specific thing (ctrl+f tavern), with adventure mode taverns more a footnote.
