Fief: the Medieval Manor Simulation
« on: October 23, 2013, 01:28:47 pm »

Hey fellow DF-enthusiasts,

I just released my first alpha version of Fief: the Medieval Manor Simulation.  It is a rogue-like 2D turn-based game in which you essentially start from scratch on a new wild manor and build your way into a thriving town and kingdom.  The game is currently in very early alpha with mostly only survival-game elements in place.  Feel free to give it a try and tell me what you think.

Information and downloads can be found at my website here:  www.arboreantears.com/fief

Cheers,

Why not use the old thread? :P

Well if its released... why doesnt it include what the game is supposed to have and why is it only at 0.3 alpha o.O?

Keep in mind i havent downloaded it yet but the website does quite give the same information as you seem to say here.

that was a luky dwarf. I had one dabbling surgeon fail so spectacularly that the patient skull flew a tile away from the table.

DF doesn't mold players into its image - DF merely selects those who were always ready for DF.

Minecraft UI is very simple. There's only so many ways you can implement "simple" without copying something. We also gonna complain that it uses WASD?

I can't make it work... I open the fief.jar with java but there's an error message about OPTIONS.XML

Glad to see a release finally. I can open the game but not get in to play. It does loading after setting map variable and then gets to a black screen for me.

Looks like a very simple URW but the concept sounds interesting so I am looking forward to seeing the project expand. Good luck with it.

At what pace are you developing this game and when can we expect to see the first real fief management aspects?

OK, I have to reload the save.
There was a bit of a problem regarding flashfreezing, a ballistae, and a barrel of dwarven ale. Gonna fix it up.

I'm impressed how much progress you've made since the early project days.  Keep up the good work; you'll get to that fief eventually.

Yes, every game is better when it's harder to look at! /s

In all seriousness, it's already a tile-based game with an engine that supports sprite graphics. There's absolutely no need for it to devolve into ASCII. Don't get me wrong; ASCII serves its purpose when engine limitations are a concern. But no game should strive to be less accessible just because it's the hipster way.

I don't think hipster's the right word here, I mean, you can't deny that ASCII looks a whole lot better than some shoddy, unpolished, elementary drawings.
