It's a trap. Seriously, that's all the explanation you need. Sufficient ranks in Craft: Trapmaking and a few spell prerequisites would make something like this perfectly legal by RAW.

I don't think it's that party, because there were three of them in that party.

Those were mostly joke characters, these are a bit more on the serious side. No idea whether there was a third person with them earlier and had run off before Forgath met them.
