It seems rare to find forum mods who are not horrible. We have it pretty good 'round these parts.

Probably helps that there aren't too many of us that aren't Toady One or Threetoe, and the mods that aren't them are restricted to specific subforums.

My best guess is due to the nature of the people here. We're doing our duty as people, and they trust us with doing it correctly.

Yeah, I really like how we're really trying not to attract attention here. We're really polite people.

That is the reason I like this forum so much. Real relaxed people who are generally pretty cool.

The only other forum I go to is a play-by-post roleplaying forum (...Literally the first result you get from googling 'roleplaying forum' .-.) that has a very active moderation team that won't hesitate to bring the hammer down on you... But much prefers to just roleplay with you instead.

The entire database got wiped by some bullshit, erasing 7 years of roleplay from quite frankly, over a thousand people. The admin remade the forum from scratch and is taking advice and suggestions. So thats a pretty cool forum.

But the Goblins forum... Eh. The mods seem nice. I think that honestly, they are panicked, and are just trying to do damage control... And are sadly, being unprofessional, like the moderator Wears Hats, who accused a forum member of lying... Because he was speculating what happened. He said sorry later, but... *shrug*

Sorry for the rambling post. .-.

In my experience a bad mod typically reacts badly because he didn't think it through, and then refuses to admit he's wrong because he doesn't want to allow a crack in the impenetrable barrier between the Common Member and His Most Wrathful Majesty The Moderator.

When they keep a cool head and are willing to admit mistakes you see fewer flare-ups.

Then again there are some forums out there with completely draconian rules that make you seriously question whether there is any discussion possible without violating at least some of them. And would anyone want to have a discussion with a Sword of Damocles like that hanging over them. Some of those forums seem to create these labrynthian and onerous rules to keep the peace, but others seem to be owned by a controlling dick who just wants to have power over others.

B12 Forum has some solid, sensible rules and I think that helps, in addition to the quality of the social interaction of the community and the quality of the moderators.

I hang out here and on 4chan.  It's nice to have polite discourse on a range of nerdy topics here, and then get the same thing on /tg/ with insincere offensiveness and silly memes.  I wouldn't change either community.

I've always assumed that trolls came here like anywhere else, but just got banned for relatively minor infractions.  Which is fine with me, since the result is a very friendly community full of people who like being here enough to avoid escalating arguments.  Mostly, of course.

Edit: So basically I always assumed that we did have a Sword of Damocles situation here.  Maybe that's just cynical of me  :)

I think here it's more like knowing there's a guard with a sheathed sword at the door, crowded place, but he'd rather stand there and not do anything unless you're really being a shit. Whereas the forums I was thinking of that had harsh, arbitrary, comprehensive rules it feels like even if you say something harmless you're gonna get blasted for it, and unless you tone down your personality until you type out only the blandest, most worthless things you will eventually say something that somebody doesn't like.

Maybe it's the same people who troll at 4chan and come here to be nice and enjoy just having a (different kind of) good time?

Well, I'd say Bay12 IS rather awful...

In all seriousness, I hope you are joking. Its...Rather obvious that he didn't mean that.

I feel sorry whenever I see the little seams where Toady had to get involved and remove posts.  Maybe one reason for our politeness is that squashing flamewars distracts him from the Great Work.

Oh yes. I know that's actually a thing that I think about. Whenever I see a moderation post from Toady it's always a sad moment because I know he could have been making something wonderful happen instead.

Perhaps us goblins fans on Bay12 could work to geather to write some kinda... Open letter to post on the Goblins forum, (I'll post it, I've already got an account with them.) and state our opinion of them censoring any thought on the mater? (Like seriously, the mods turned the thread into a thread about FOOD.)

I could see that ending poorly. They may very well take it to "We, bay12ers, think you mods are arseholes" if they seem to be over-reacting at the moment. Outside critism will probably not get the best reception
