Although were I running the game, letting Kore cast would be a not-fun option. But that's just because of my group - enough of us know the rules well enough to expect that Hold Person would lock him down unless he made the save, so breaking that expectation to let my antagonist keep on truckin' would've been shutting down player agency (especially since, if Kore is a paladin, relying on a failed save is a huge, huge gamble which should be rewarded, if anything).

That's something weird I noticed: Paladins don't actually have good will saves.  If Kore is level 10, his will save is a mere +3 (plus wisdom modifier, plus *charisma* modifier because of "divine grace" class ability).  That's likely to be around a 10 assuming his charisma and wisdom stats are actually high.  Forgath's hold person spell would have a DC of 12 plus his wisdom, so probably at least 15.  That's roughly a 25% chance of success, not too shabby against a target *6 levels above him*.

Of course, Hold Person has apparently been nerfed in this universe, but Forgath prepared it without expecting a divine spellcaster.
In this universe, creatures get a stackable bonus to wisdom as they age, Kor being the last of the Greyhill paladins may be as old as the Axe of Prissan, centuries old, and thus have a tremendous wisdom modifier. Maybe.
It could also be a bit of him having… acquired various artifacts that have assisted in his gaining such power.

It's a bit hard to tell without colour, but Forgath manages to hit Kore on the head, though it barely leaves a mark on his helmet. He then dodged Kore's counterattack and stabs him in the palm. Kore then hits Forgath, knocking him to the ground and sending his helmet flying. You can see a new cut above his right eye.

I think Kore allowed himself to be stabbed through the hand on purpose, as some sort of twisted disarming maneuver. You can still see the axe sticking out the back of his hand in the last frame, and he sure as hell isn't bothered by it.

I remember hearing that was a move sometimes used in duels (with rapiers and the like). You let them stab you through the non-sword hand, and that gives you typically a non-fatal wound that doesn't inhibit you then stabbing them with their sword trapped.

It occurs to me that move would result in a non-functioning left hand after just a few duels. Also this is more of a "spike that makes a hole the size of your palm" rather than a thin sword. Seems like if you then knocked your opponent back he would just pull his weapon out as he fell. Again, comic =/= game or reality.

A few things to note on that.

Comic wise it can be done because magic. Healing powers mean almost any wound can  be recovered from.

In real life? How many duels did people fight on average? While I don't think it was a 'every fight do this', if it gave an advantage enough to perforate your opponent - you've won. Duel over, because they're dead. Again, not saying it's necessarily true. Just something I remember hearing back in the mists of time that sounded interesting, so I thought I'd share it.

Oh I'm sure people did it sometimes - even if accidentally! I wasn't naysaying your thing.

I can imagine the reaction if this were to happen in the middle of a game session though.

Oh, for those people who were saying he couldn't use Remove Paralysis because he couldn't move his lips, you don't necessarily have to move your lips to speak, you know. Maybe he's mastered the art of ventriloquism. And if people can't move their lungs during Paralysis, how come they don't suffocate?

Interesting point.  Hold Person specifically says the person can't speak, not to mention that being paralyzed means they can't take any action at all (but are specifically allowed to breathe).  It could be an artifact or houseruled feat which allows speaking while paralyzed, though.

Not to mention that Cure Paralysis has a somatic (hand waving) component, though preparing it with Still Spell would make sense for such a situation.

That would only make it weirder that Forgath's spell worked at all, though, unless the houserule is that there's no initial saving throw.  Which would be... really something.

The whole situation is so weird, from a mechanical standpoint.  Forgath casts Hold Person and Cure Moderate Wounds before Kore acts.  The Hold Person somehow affects someone with a good or possibly insane will save.  Kore somehow acts despite being paralyzed...

It's pretty cool looking though, and I don't actually mind the mechanics oddities.  It's fun to try to figure them out, but I'm accepting that they aren't game-accurate and just enjoying the fight.  Go Forgath, survive somehow!

I find it amusing that you guys are debating over rules and house rules, while one of the main characters multi-classed into every class in one level.
