Oh don't worry. It's going to be especially fun when Fane Ravien or Henry of the Holes is brutally disembowled. They survive but live out the rest of their days in agonizing pain. Kept alive only as amusement for the victor. I probably won't go THAT far but keep that in mind when you choose to DEFEND in a game about offense.

That being said I'm thinking the next iteration of this game should change the DEFEND, Armor, and Shield Mechanic. Specifically this:

1. DEFEND always gives you a +3 bonus to Counter rolls regardless of shield type. Each shield gives you extra DEFENDS though. Buckler gives you 1, Small Shield 2, and Tower Shield 3. Having no shield will give you a single defend as well but it is only a +1 to DEFEND.

2. Armor mitigates too much damage. Blood-shed is the name of the game [sort've... You're fodder, not walls of steel] and so I'm thinking it might be nice to have armor give you a bonus to health. None = +0, Leather +1, etc. etc. That way even people like Fane Ravien in Centurion armor stop being unstoppable bad-asses and just become hunks of health. Of course there'd still be room for -1 DAM from Swords, or the like but that's just a thought I'm having.

So a buckler is useless in that? Or am I reading it wrong?

Anyway. Throw my spear at Leon, then pike his head!

No.

No shield = 1 DEFEND action, DEFEND gives +1 bonus to Counter Rolls
Buckler = 1 DEFEND action, DEFEND gives +3 bonus to Counter Rolls
Small Shield = 2 DEFEND actions, DEFEND gives +3 bonus ...
Tower Shield = 3 DEFEND actions, DEFEND gives +3 bonus ...

Parry, Was planning on attacking you anyway. You intend to pike me after throwing your spear?

Edit:Also, making note to nick Mourning Star if a chance arrives, could sell it or something.
(Ah my poor character, thinks he will survive this war.)

No.

No shield = 1 DEFEND action, DEFEND gives +1 bonus to Counter Rolls
Buckler = 1 DEFEND action, DEFEND gives +3 bonus to Counter Rolls
Small Shield = 2 DEFEND actions, DEFEND gives +3 bonus ...
Tower Shield = 3 DEFEND actions, DEFEND gives +3 bonus ...
What about... I know! What about a durability thing before they become useless? As in for example:

Attacker (Person A or just A) attacks defender( known as B)
A rolls lets say a 5
B rolls maybe rolls a 2 with a tower shield while blocking.

While B lives via the 3+ with the tower shield but it takes wear and tear.

This is the way it's calculated:
If the defenders roll was lower, take the lower number away from the attackers number, in this case, 3
Tower shield has 5 durability, so it's durability is decreased to 2, he still has it, but he better be careful next time!
With parrying, durability loss just means you get mal bonuses on your attack rolls from then on.

While armour just takes away the defence bonus you get.

@Cain12

It was a sad day for Matis’ progeny, for some still exist to this very day, as Mourning Star was never recovered.

Yeah, Mourning Star is lost for eternity.

I dunno. This is supposed to be simple. Keeping track of shield durability seems a bit needlessly complicated. It sounds AWESOME for another game but for this one it just doesn't seem to fit.

Yeah, read that, wasn't intending to actually take it/find it/have it mentioned again, was a character thing. Guess I didn't make that clear, will use some sort of text colour or font for such things in future.

(Also, no need to put the same tools, I just mean retool a new character with the name matis the second, doesn't need the same weapons.)

I was going to do that anyway. Even when Axe the Not-Yet-Undead Pre-Zombie comes back as Axe the Currently-Undead Now-Zombie or whatever he'll get new stuff too. The only things you choose are Name, Class, and Side. Everything else changes.

"Can't you just go and stab somebody else? It'd be easier and more useful. I'm hardly a threat to anyone, really."

Defend some more, then, in a more retreating kind of way.

How about simplifying it even further, and, instead of limiting the amount of Defend actions per life, giving each shield a chance to be destroyed in any given attack?

Then from the defender's perspective, it would make sense to only use shields in emergencies, and from the attackers' perspective, mobbing defending people would be more lucrative than just letting one person keep them busy.
