"POW Fort", or, "Atrocities in the name of !SCIENCE!"

Soapyboar, 3rd Felsite, 553, Late Spring.

Two Years ago, Vampire Queen Erib Momuzem Thalalkizest Ottan mandated the use of Prisoners of War and Lesser Species in scientific testing. This Journal will document these tests.

Today, we began what we call "drop testing". This will tell us the odds of broken bones from various heights. Test one involved 8 goblin babies, from a height of 11 Dwarf Measures.

Results follow:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Promising Results so far. Our incinerator, a dragon, will not seem to target these test subjects. We hope this will change in the future.

Together, we will usher in a new age of Scientific Discovery.

Doren Degelken, Manager and Head Researcher,
Soapyboar

Raw data: Results from a single test, not properly processed. A show of concept, but not proof.
Final data is the results of multiple tests averaged together. Better proof of concept than raw data.

Practical Information Gained:
Raw Data
-From an 11 Z-level, there is a 100% chance of broken bones.
-There is 25% chance of dying on impact, and a 63% chance of dying overall.
-The amount of broken bones ranges from 2 to 9 with an average of 4.625 (5) bones broken.
-Of the breaks, almost all were "shattered" (as opposed to chipped or fractured), and the rest were "jammed through" muscles, and, in the case of the two who died on impact, the heart and brain.

-Blood splatter did not appear to be discriminate, ranging anywhere from 1 (directly at the point of impact) to 3 tiles away in any direction

-Of note, my captured tame dragon incinerator will not target the remaining babies. I believe this is because I used dfusion to impregnate captured goblins, and thus they were born in the fort. This DID work with a test run of a troglidyte. They will be incinerated following test number two, where a video will be given.

Insufficient Data to State final findings.

Soapyboar, 14th Hematite, 553, Early Summer.
Second Test. 8 Troglodytes from a height of 10 Dwarf Measures.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We got the incinerator working. As a result, miasma is almost nonexistent.

The Queen has moved me into the former Baron's house, who was killed during the taming of the Dragon. I hear whispers of a promotion. I must keep going. FOR !SCIENCE!

Doren Degelken, Manager and Head Researcher,
Soapyboar

Practical Information:
Raw Data
-From a 10 Z-level Fall, There is a 100% chance of broken bones.
-50% of the subjects died on impact; an increase of 25%. However, none of the subjects died later from their injuries, leaving the TOTAL also at 50%; a decrease of 13%.
-The number of broken bones ranged from 1 to 4, with an average of 2.375; almost half that of the last test.
-As before, almost all breaks were "shattered". There were a few torn muscles as a result, and 4 torn brains.

-Blood splatter also seemed to decrease, from a range of 1 - 3 to a range of 1 to 2 (from point of impact, point of impact inclusive).

-The incinerator works. It is basically a dragon chained in the bottom of the tube. It leaves almost no corpses.

Observations:
Although it is too early to say definitively, it appears as though the decrease by one z-level has MASSIVELY decreased damage and bloodsplatter. I intend to do each of these tests, from 11 to 3, 3 times each and average it out, before moving on to my next set of experiments.

Insufficient Data to State final findings.

Soapyboar, 24th Malachite, 553, Mid Summer.

I'm afraid that Doren Degelken, my predecessor, has been laid to rest. He went around attacking his fellow dwarves, screaming something about "ghosts", and "!SCIENCE!", before the marksdwarves put him down. As a result, the Barony of Soapyboar has been bestowed unto me by our great Queen. I will continue testing where Doren left off.

Yesterday's tests consisted of 8 goblin thieves and warriors, stripped of their equipment, from 9 Dwarf Measures. Results are as follows:

My loyalty to our Queen is unquestionable, and my duty to progress, unwavering. I will bring this fort !SCIENCE! at any cost.

P.S. Consult Her Majesty on the acquisition of new subjects. We are running low.

Practical Information:
Raw Data
-From a 9 Z-level fall, there is a 100% chance of broken bones.
-50% died on impact, and 0 died later from their wounds. This is unchanged.
- Number of broken bones ranged from 1 to 6, with an average of 3.375.
-Most breaks were "shattered." Some additional non-lethal tears, as well as the immediately lethal ones, as before.

-Blood splatter ranged from 1-2, as before, but appeared to be smaller.

Observations:
Not what I expected, but it could just be an outlier. Must wait for more testing.

I do like the incinerator. Could be a useful way to destroy unwanted (flammable) junk - dump them in with a troglodyte and let the dragon do the work. Even more so as I believe dragonfire is hotter than magma, so a lot of metals will melt away as well.

It's much more dwarven than a simple drawbridge!

And at the end, we will be able to make a table on the wiki of fall damage from various heights. No more diving off a cliff in adventure mode and hoping for the best. XD

Soapyboar, 1st Limestone, 553, Early Autumn.

Armok has answered our prayers. The Goblin siege ran right into our cage traps, capturing atleast 30 more test subjects, maybe more.

But it's not enough. Never enough.

I've spoken to Her Majesty, she has ordered our archers to fire on the Human Caravan from the walls. When word of our actions reaches the humans, we will have more test subjects. BETTER test subjects, as my research shows that we are more closely related to humans than goblins.

Armok Bless our research.

Soapyboar, 22nd Limestone, 553, Early Autumn.

It's done. The humans were taken by surprise. They never stood a chance. Most were crippled by our Marksdwarves, and were then torn to shreds by our Guards. We gained a few items from this endeavour, but what I want will arrive when word of our actions reaches their king.

Testing will continue shortly. Nothing can stop me now.

When you're done dropping P.O.W.s you need to build a maze with a safe way out of camp. It'll be very GlaDOS of you, too. DwarfDOS!

I think that'd be more jigsawy, considering they have multiple fractures and broken spines. XD

Soapyboar, 28th Hematite, 554, Early Summer.

ARMOK DAMN HER!

I apologize for the length between journal entries; I was working on a side project. WAS working on a side project. One of our champions, who had lost function in both of his hands, was feeling depressed. He missed the slaughter. As such, we were using the top floor of the chute to feed him enemies to train on. It was going well, his biting and kicking skills were amazing.

A few weeks ago, I went to his room to fetch him for more training, only to find him dead, drained of all his blood. I know it was her. I KNOW IT.

I'll deal with her later.

7 Goblins and one human from 8 Dwarf Measures.

Nice work so far! You know, as much as I approve of incinerating living creatures, you could probably cage the survivors and use them for future tests. Invading creatures tend to heal over time, and I assume this applies to goblins, too.

I have a feeling that as I kill them, it registers in their civilization, making them want to send another siege, and recycling them might not do that. I'll look into it, though. Will just take a bit of an overhaul

Actually, I think the civilization considers a caged member as as good as dead. For example, caging the goblin leader will stop goblins from using mounts, just the same as if you killed him.
