The fortress was going through a clothe shortage. My two clothiers could keep up demand, but there wasn't enough cloth. The Mountainhomes also expressed a great need for backpacks, but I did not have much leather either. An elf caravan came, they had eight bins of cloth, and three leather, just what I needed. I was was going to trade, only to realize I had accidentally selected a wooden bin to trade to them. They made the usual, smug remark about "our stunted kind", and then refused to trade. I ordered my military squad of six to kill them all. Two got there first, killed them all without much of a fight. Now their bodies are probably going to start stinking up the place.....by the way, is there a way I can put their bodies on a higher priority to be hauled than say, the stuff the caravan left behind?

Ehh, just let them go. They'll haul themselves and their stuff away, saving you the cleanup.

You can still grab the items you want by temporarily preventing the caravan from leaving and setting the desired items to be dumped. Your dwarves will then chase after the elves to carry out the dump order.

Tip for next time: you can simply "s"eize whatever you desire from the elven or human caravans. This will anger the merchants and makes them leave the fort without further trade, but if you didn't intend to pay for their stuff anyway, there's no major downside to it. Saves you having to clean up dead elves and stupid wooden hats.

You can also demolish the depot while the traders are still in. All items in the depot will be dumped on the ground and are considered property of your fort.

I'm not saying you shouldn't kill the elves, i just find it worthwile to strive for a bit of variety in the elf abusal department. Cave-ins, water, magma and random dropped items are also great sources of caravan-based entertainment. Ballistae, unfortunately, aren't - there seems to be a huge hit-chance penalty when shooting friendly units.

Yep. Select everything you want in the trade window, hit "s", bam! everything changes owner and the caravan shoves off.

This can only be done with humans and elves, you can't rip off your own civ's caravan like that.

You can even do this after offering wooden items to the elves if you don't escape out of the trade window - they'll be annoyed and show "unwilling to trade", but you can still confiscate all their shit.

What're the repercussions of a seize? Do elves stop coming? Go to war? Expect greater profit in the future? Puss Elf out and just take it?

It effects relations negatively, but the Elves never do anything about it, except take less crap with them next year. Humans might actually siege you if you seize enough goods.

In that case, taking all the human's stuff by accidentally disassembling the trading post before they left was probably seen as a bad thing...

However, since you offered them a wooden bin before killing them, it's much worse, because they actually care more about their trees than their kin. I'm not sure exactly how bad the relations have to be to start a siege, but doing that a couple times ought to cause one.
