Math Problems
« on: October 17, 2013, 04:44:47 pm »

Meet the lowly trig student, me.
So, I have stumbled across a problem where you have to create trigonometric identities, and proof them. However, on this particular one, I am stumped.

cos(x)+sin(x)-sin^(3)(x)/sin(x)=cot(x)+cos^(2)(x)

Thanks for the help!

Rewriting cot(x) as cos(x)/sin(x) is always one of my first steps.

Is the /sin(x) on the left the denominator for the rest of the left, or just sin^(3)(x)?

It is the denominator. Thanks for your help so far!

[cos(x) + sin(x) - sin^(3)(x)]/sin(x)

[sin(x)/tan(x) + sin(x) - sin^(3)(x)]/sin(x)

1/tan(x) + 1 - sin^(2)(x)

cot(x) + sin^(2)(x) + cos^(2)(x) - sin^(2)(x)

cot(x) + cos^(2)(x)

Always start with the side that looks more complicated.
