Newb questions
« on: October 17, 2013, 03:26:08 pm »

Hi, I'm new to the game and the forum.
I want to get to know the game (it was discribed to me as a mix of stronghold, minecraft and sims :D ), and already found the lazy newb pack.
But there are two versions; the standard version and the advanced version, supplying the game with the isometric 3d of stonesense.
Now I want to know which pack I should use and whether or not it makes sense to use the graphics of stonesense as a beginner. And maybe you have a few general tips for me (except for consulting the wiki). ^^

If there is any error in spelling or grammar I beg your pardon, English isn't my mother tongue.

The third one: LNP Extended.

Good luck! May Armok have mercy on your soul.

I think just using a texture pack is the best way to go, for beginners or otherwise (though the default ASCII has plenty of fans, too). All versions of the LNP have several of these included, but the extended version will has more.

I never could get stonesense to work on my computer, but I know it's not a full interface, just a visualizer, meaning you'll have to flip back to the standard interface to actually do anything.

Honestly I am starting with the basic LNP(new myself sort of, played a bit in the past a few years ago). I looked at that, but it seemed overly complicated with a ton of mods that I may or may not want to use when I figure things out. It seems based on the descriptions as well that stonesense and fortress overseer are identical so what's the point in the advanced one besides DFHack(which I would not want to use use, as it seems like cheating to me being able to mod all the game settings).

Also as above stated Stonesense is just a way to look at your fort on occasion in a graphical isometric view(which I think fortress overseer does as well), and you cannot play the game with that.

I went ahead and just got the extended LNP after finding out all those mods and options you can turn on/off easily from the launcher. I didn't realize these packs had a launcher like that with them, so it's kinda pointless not to get the extended one it seems so I can use those as and if I want the mods later. Though I noticed the newest extended version the tooltips are gone when turning options on/off which is a bit annoying as I have no clue what "varied ground" does. Sorry for spamming the thread a bit :).

Varied ground basically is if you want varied ground. :P It's an aesthetic preference on whether you want your ground a solid color or in slightly different shades. And yes, I recommend you get the Expanded LNP from the get-go. Not only for the plugins (which you can safely ignore) but for the bug-fixes (like dwarves born in fortresses never growing up in size, despite doing so in age, or traders coming in with migrants and getting stuck at map edges because they're wearing clothing that the fortress does not own). Also it contains more graphics sets and updated versions of old ones.

Also note that the things bundled in the LNPs are utilities and plugins, not mods. So you're still basically getting the vanilla gameplay with enhancements to the UI mainly to make it more newb-friendly. Mods have to be downloaded separately.

Varied ground is whether you want the ground to look like ,'` and variations of that or if you just want periods.
