As the title says, Cartoon Hangover's hit cartoon Bee and Puppycat has a Kickstarter to produce a television-quality show. They're asking $600k to make six six-minute episodes, with their biggest stretch goal being a cool 1 million to make 11 episodes (plus, y'know, send out all the rewards.)

If you don't know what Bee and Puppycat is, take ten minutes and watch the pilot. It's trippy, and I love it. It's created by Natasha Allegri, whose claim to fame is as a character designer and a "storyboard revisionist" (whatever that is) on Adventure Time, and the genderbender Fionna and Cake episodes are based on her work. But, come on, if you're still thinking about it go listen to Puppycat's Fairy Tale again. I want a better ending, dammit!

The Kickstarter is already at $118k and only started today, so it seems quite likely that they'll meet the original goal. I myself decided I was rich and kicked in at the $50 level, which gets me a physical DVD of the episodes along with the digital downloads, soundtrack, and a bunch of other crap I don't care about.

And since there is no other Bee and Puppycat thread AFAIK, I'm just gonna leave this here on my way out. Repeat counter is on 321 for me.

B&PC is created by a woman who boarded for AT and was the boarder for (at least) the first Fionna and Cake episode.

I loved B&PC especially the jobhunter-helper-turtle.

I loved this and I'm glad they're making more. I've backed at the $15 level for now, and I'll probably go up to $20 and maybe $50.

Thought I'd give this a bump: the Kickstarter is about 70% funded with 14 days to go. It looks like it will be a near thing, at the current rate.

They also posted a "where all the money goes" update, so if you've ever wondered exactly how ludicrously expensive cartoons are to make, here you go.

Bee and PuppyCat: The Series Budget Breakdown

WRITING/STORYBOARDS: $68,873 (13.9%): 6 people - writers, storyboard artists, storyboard revisionists working 9 weeks.

PRODUCER: $20,455 (4.1%): 29 weeks of making sure everything happens.

DIRECTOR: $24,000 (4.9%): 29 weeks of bringing the vision of the show to life, or at least to the screen.

TALENT/CASTING/RECORDING: $42,221 (8.5%): This takes 7 to 10 people including the casting agent, recording studio, recording engineers, dialogue editors, and of course the cast.

PRODUCTION OFFICE/STAFF: $43,514 (8.8%): 7 people coordinating dozens of people and mountains of paperwork for most of 29 weeks.

DESIGN: $36,300 (7.3%): 4 people doing character design, prop design, background design, & design cleanup for three weeks.

COLOR DESIGN: $28,800 (5.8%): 2 people doing background painting and color styling for three weeks.

POST PRODUCTION $21,521 (4.4%): 5 people - a sound designer, sound effects editor, foley artist, re-recording engineer, and a composer work for four weeks.

ANIMATION/EDITORIAL: $208,575 (42.2%): 38 people including an animation director, model checkers, animation supervisors, layout artists, key animators, checkers, color stylists, compositors, their own production staff, and editors working for 16 weeks. This is mostly done in Korea to keep costs low and quality high. Most traditionally animated shows are done there.

This puts the total cost of "just making the show" at a tad under 500k. The remaining 100k goes mostly to Kickstarter (they say it's 16%, so 96k right there,) with the remainder covering the cost of rewards and various transaction fees.

Oh hey, I should sing and dance in here. Bee and Puppycat met their goal. And also the first stretch goal, bringing them to 7 episodes total. If they can manage another 40k in the next sixty hours, they'll get up to 8 episodes (and people will have the option to select Blu-Ray of the episodes instead of DVD, assuming they kicked in enough for that level.) Probably a pipe dream to hope for meeting the 9 episode stretch goal in that timeframe, but a man can dream.

But yeah, huzzah, more Bee and Puppycat will exist!

I wish I had become a colour designer. Seriously, aren't they a bit overpriced?

Don't have the money for this. Plus I dropped Adventure Time for personal reasons that I don't want to get into.
