X Games: to wait or buy now?
« on: October 14, 2013, 08:38:57 pm »

I've been considering buying an X game (those nifty spacecraft simulators) for a while now and I've recently decided to snag myself a copy of Albion Prelude. But then I hear rumors of a new game called X: Rebirth. I hear you can walk around in your ship! Talk to crew! Visit cities!
But I also hear that you're limited to controlling one ship, can't control capital ships, and a few more things. So my question to you, Bay12, in your professional capacity as the Internet, is: should I just buy Albion Prelude or wait for Rebirth?

Personally, I'm waiting till it's actually released before I buy it or give a verdict. Will probably wait for a while too to get the bugs sorted out first.

I'm waiting, but I'll probably buy rebirth eventually.

I do recommend reading for yourself, as the parts of it I'm familiar with have (as per always on the damn internet) been misreported, twisted, or just lied about. You have "your" ship that you start with, and that's the one you directly pilot, but word from the devs is you CAN sit in the admiral's chair of a capitol ship you own and give orders to the rest of your fleet from there. It was supposedly a compromise to keep you from having to spend fights piloting capitol ships performing 5-minute turns by holding A or 4 or whatever, and let you actually play.

Some people apparently really, REALLY wanted those 5 minute stretches of AAAAAAAAAAA so it turns into "but you can only pilot one ship this is All Ruined Forever! bawwwwwwwwwww!"

*ahem* sorry. Yeah, I'm in the "wait and see" crowd.

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

So you can, even indirectly, pilot capital ships. Well that's a relief; if I'm going to be playing a space sim I want the opportunity to command a dreadnought of some sort.

Posting to Watch.

Personally, I'm kinda burned out on games like that.

And I actually like Sid Meier's Pirates better than all the X Space like games I've played.

As this point we might as well invoke interpretive dance and call it a day.

I'd say get Albion Prelude for now, even if you do end up getting X-Rebirth later.

Reasoning:

1) AP's a good game, and even if Rebirth turns out to be better, you should still get a lot of mileage out of AP.

2) AP's currently a heck of a lot cheaper - if it turns out not to be your style, you've invested a lot less in finding that out (though I suppose there's even cheaper, less legal ways of making that assessment too).

3) It'll let you skip any potential launch issues with Rebirth, playing AP while any bugs with Rebirth are patched up.

4) It'll also give the rest of the internet time to play Rebirth so they can give you a more informed opinion on whether it's worth moving onto that and whether any changes turned out to be good ones (as said, right now there's quite a lot of speculation and misinformation).

5) Since neither are online multiplayer games, there's no particular rush to get playing Rebirth asap before any playerbase dwindles; even if you weren't getting AP, 3 & 4 are good reasons to delay buying until a while after release (not that I always manage to live by that advice myself...).

I would personally grab Terran conflict now. Rebirth even if it turns out good is going to have a rocky launch. Nearly all the X games have had a rough start. Terran conflict is also a bit more freeform than Albion Prelude since there's a war and stuff going on in there and it kinda affects how you'll be playing the game until a plot is finished.

Do look around for some mods to make life a little easier before you even start though. The games are awesome but like Bethesda games they need a bit of a polish to really shine.

Welp, bought TC and AP and I'm gonna buy Rebirth a few months after it comes out. I figure it's worth it.
