This will be a new competitive game I'll be trying. Every player joins one of two teams, or corporations, and manages both the metagame, along with frequent skirmishes along the way, utilizing your progress from the metagame.
The purpose of this game is to win the most skirmishes, likely with some random events, until your final mission appears. The more skirmishes you've won, the more resources you'll have at your disposal to complete this final mission. If the game survives for a while, after the final mission, another round will start. Probably in a new topic. This is more of a short 'test' round to play with my concept.
There is no actual overarching map. Between each skirmish, (usually about one or two turns), you manage your corporation with your fellow teammates, hopefully improving your effectiveness in the battles. When not in a skirmish, you can do many things, including creating new units, conducting research, and designing new vehicles, units, and buildings.
Research is conducted between each round. When you research something, you don't follow from a specific set of options. You simply think of what you want to research with your teammates. Although there is no specific research building or system, you >can< affect it by buildings, and such. The majority of the work gets done by allocating a set amount of credits after each skirmish for your research budget, which will act as a modifier, along with my jurisdiction and some dice rolling, for how much research you can get done.
Money is of course the generic 'credits' currency, and is one of the main points of the game. When you successfully complete a skirmish round, you will gain a set amount of credits, determined beforehand. You will also get currency after each round from other sources, if you have any.
You may construct one building at a time. After each round, you will be able to choose what to build. If you have any building project ongoing, it will replace the current project. Buildings can be researched, and designed, and do a wide variety of things, including creating money, harvesting minerals, hiring units, and more.
Units are your combat force that you bring into each skirmish. The amount of units, and how fast they're deployed, depends on your transport vehicle(s). You can design your own, or just build many default ones. Units are designed by you, and created/recruited/manufactured at a building, and may be of virtually any nature (mechanical, alien, human. Pretty much anything that isn't 'THE IMMORTAL GODS THAT HAVE COME TO AVENGE THEIR FALLEN'), although it may impact how many can be carried by a transport. Units have an upkeep paid after each skirmish, and a random percentage will desert, break down, etc., based on what they are.
At any point in the game, you may submit a design for a unit, building, or really anything. Designs can do whatever you want, as long as it stays within the laws of reality, though it may impact their price. For instance, you could create a design for a heavily armored quad rotor vehicle transport vehicle to bring in vehicles in the midst of a battle, or an amphibious tank with dual rail guns. You can of course also submit designs for buildings, so for instance you could have a building which deals in interrogations of prisoners, or a different building that deals with manufacturing a specific unit.
Skirmishes are the entire point of this game. The purpose of the meta game is to prepare you to win the skirmishes. Each team first deploys their starting expedition force, and will be able to call in their troops whenever. However, due to the nature of the game, anything can happen. One team can deploy a hovering nanofactory (unlikely) as their expeditionary force (more unlikely), while another time a team could use air support or deploy AA guns to keep the other team from using their own aircraft. Each skirmish will be done in a turn based format in a lightly drawn map, with each team telling the GM their orders for their units. This is subject to change. If a team lost, they will still get things done in the meta game, and will still gain currency from their other sources, and if early enough in the game, will probably be given a small amount of recovery money by their 'corporation'. Teams can of course surrender and retreat. To further explain on the map, it'll be the main information you get about the battle. Your foot soldiers will be represented by dots, you'll be able to see last turn's weapon fire, etc. The map itself can range from very small to relatively large.
This round will be fairly basic. It'll be primarily based around visuals, and won't have a specific movement system. I'll likely be using a D12 and/or a D20 for most combat rolls. A single turn in a skirmish would maybe be something like this
"Move Squad alpha to left of the lake and set up the mortar. Squad Beta will jump with their jetpacks across the lake and immediately open fire on the enemy tank with explosive munitions.", and can be a lot shorter, or a whole lot bigger.
Minerals are mined at buildings, and are used to construct some buildings, and most units.
If you wish, you may steal resources from the opposing team, sabotage them, or more. Along with this, you can do many other things not mentioned in the various spoilers. If you have any questions, just ask me.
