First Goblin Ambush
« on: October 13, 2013, 05:12:36 pm »

As a relatively new player of Dwarf Fortress, I have not yet experienced a full on assault. Today, a goblin ambush attacked. I was definitely NOT prepared for this. I had a military of 15 dwarfs, 9 heavily armored swordsdwarves, and 6 lightly armored speardwarves. It was an absolute bloodbath. I lost 3 of the lightly armored units, and 1 baby  :'( (I don't know why a baby was outside the fort). A civilian was badly injured, and so were two of the swordsdwarves (not to mention the minor wounds many received). They will likely recover.

What was your first goblin raid like?

One of my best military guys is depressed because his wife was the civilian injured and his baby was the one killed. Guess that was why the baby was outside. At least his other child is a prodigy (artifact mug FTW)

That's actually not bad for a first ambush.

Are the other dorfs too busy hauling junk?

They killed over 80 Dwarves who were only accustomed to fleeing from giant badgers. It was entertaining to see everything crash down so quickly.

Pretty sure I had no military and they killed almost everyone. I don't think I had more than 30 dwarves at the time. It's all a little fuzzy to me. The memory that really sticks out is the time I lost my fort to a swarm of crundles, but that's a story for another thread.

The bloodbath was more of a literal thing, the goblin blood got in my moat.

I started my military early, so it wasn't so bad.

Will the elves throw a fit and siege me because their caravan was caught in the conflict?

Not likely. It's very hard to make the elves attack unless you put elven diplomats back into the game, e.g. with dfhack's fixdiplomats command.

Does this become a historical event? Maybe I can get them to engrave the walls with images of the battle.

Also, the captain of the light troops had an axe. Oops. Anyway, he is apparently 'The Gloved Order' now. I guess that means he is an historical figure? Now I just need some artifact gauntlets...

Huh, the commander got most of the kills. He is now the 'Cursed Griffin of Clasping'

Yep, proud dwarven mothers always carry their babies into combat with them.

Also they won't recover the injured swordsdwarf. Anybody know why this is?

Could be that he's not unconscious. Dwarves that are injured (and seemingly worth taking to the hospital) won't be recovered unless they are knocked out, I think. Don't quote me on it, though.

They mercilessly slaughtered everything in their paths until they got to the entrance, where a line of Cage traps picked them all up. The second ambush was barely put down by the military. The Third wiped out the fort and earned a reclaim.

As requested I won't quote you on it, but wounded folks will be recovered even if they're conscious (and sometimes even if they can walk!). However it's a lower priority job than you'd think, below recovering corpses and below feeding/watering the wounded. Also, if one wounded is targeted for feeding or watering, he will not be targeted for recovering until after the feed or water has completed.
