Beast cohabitation?
« on: October 13, 2013, 07:29:03 am »

So I was just waltzing down in my when I came across a shrine. Wary, since I have become emotionally attached to my character, I used DFhack (the only mod I have, everything else remains unmodded) to reveal the area and found... A cyclops and a bronze colossus living together.

Spoiler: Roommates? (click to show/hide)

I thought it was a mistake of some kind so I skirted around the two in hopes that they'd duke it out. They didn't.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Anyone else encounter this before? What happened?

Only colossi normally settle in shrines, cyclopes are usually found in lairs; the cyclops might have been "displaced". Notable enemies sometimes wander the world and can be encountered as a random encounter. I've only once seen enemies mingling in one place - a bunch of vampires (seems the villagers were too good at vampire spotting, so they all gravitated to a lair) and a werebeast, filling a lair wall-to-wall.

It might be worth recording the names of the colossus and cyclops and later check their legend entries, to see if the cyclops was just wandering the world or actually settled in the shrine, and if the latter, which events led to this occurence.

I think the peaceful coexistence isn't too odd, they both belong to the mega- and semimegabeast populations, and those generally aren't hostile towards each other and can't be forced into hostility by conflicting loyalties, because they're not members of a civilisation or group.

"Look there! A foul beast, it intends to--"

"YEAH, SORRY GUYS, THAT WAS MY ROOMMATE. I'M NOT ACTUALLY GOING TO BURN YOUR VILLAGE."

"What?"

"CAN I HAVE SOME OF YOUR CATTLE? HE'LL ORDER ADVENTURER IF I DON'T BRING BACK SOMETHING TO EAT AND HE NEVER ASKS FOR THE KIND THAT I LIKE."

Coldmonkey: "The idea that having flaming tools and introducing them to the intimate workings of someone you don't get along with is much too human for these forums. I mean, it's not really that hard, is it? Anyone can wield a torch, it doesn't prove anything. Wearing flaming clothes on the other hand, or better yet, wearing nothing at all and being on fire... that is the essence of dwarfish behavior."
