What's wrong with afterburners, then?  Do they not attach to the right size of engine to be useful?

No, but I just designed in a few minutes a missile that can basically reach out 10 spaces in a turn and kill any small craft within that range.  For twice that price and some time to optimize the design, I'm sure someone could get twice that.  Fabricator bases will be basically impossible to attack without super-high-speed missiles now.

Ah, so they're TOO useful.  Either needs a nerf, or we need some form of Close In Weapon Systems.

Afterburner energy use is pretty brutal, so while it can certainly flak-bomb anything in range, it won't be able to go all that far.

Also, you'll have to launch, then pick a spot to nuke, then hope the enemy goes to a similar location.
Flak missiles like that will be the bane of predictable courses.

It will be quite important to begin evasive manoeuvres when you see a flak missile built.  Or to simply stay out of range and shoot with guns from a longer distance.

Alternatively, tank the missile with armor and/or shields, and congratulate yourself on scoring a net advantage of $600

PS:
The other "one-shot" weapon is the Charge Disruptor.
Technically, you can double-shot it, but that all but guarantees its destruction.  A single shot will do heavy damage to it but it will survive.

So basically a missile is an unmanned ship with explosives? I'm having some trouble understanding the missiles designs. Are they basically ships with super high speed engines designed to "ram" other ships in the game??

That's right; basically, you try to come within five spaces of an enemy ship, then fire the warhead(s) (same process as firing a gun).  The blast will hit your own ship as well, so you shouldn't usually use them on normal warships most of the time.  Damage at different distances from the target is 240/d, which seems like a lot but is spread over a wide area, so it doesn't usually oneshot small ships.

Generally, they are either launched from other ships by disabling explosive bolts holding them in place, or from bases by constructing them and letting them float in space until needed.

To be specific, a wash of 2-4 damage per tile will sweep across your victims from the direction of your warhead.
There is a damage multiplier based on distance so things at range 3 suffer 1/3rd the hp loss per hit.

So a fighter that is 5 tiles across would absorb between 10 and 20 single damage hits, while a gunship that's 20 tiles wide would absorb between 40 and 80 hits.

Note:
Because they are all single damage hits, emissive armor coating is fully immune to missiles.
Also, because shields give a wide bubble of protection, they suffer extra from missile hits due to their size.

Missiles are a great way to drop shields and burn off ablative armor, or deal with unarmored threats (fab bases mainly).  Missiles are awful when dealing with emmisive armor or even regular hard armor.  I've also observed thinly built ships manage to have the damage pass through them, especially at a long-range explosion.  Since structural parts only have a certain percentage chance to have a damage line hit them, it's possible for an unarmored ship to suffer less damage as the damage passes through them.  It's not reliable, but it does mean you can eek out a bit more survival by being far away.

Can someone explain how building works? Are all ships limited to the size of the largest fabricator, or are they simply money generators? The help doc seems to stop before this is addressed.

They just generate money - into individual pools for each fab - and can build any size ship they have money stored for based on the .emp ship files you have saved.

The EMP file you want to build has to cost equal or less than the stored money in the fabricator you are planning to build it with.
You can use two fabricators to build two separate EMPs, and then weld them together using a spacedock or drydock later on.

The physical size does not matter at all, only the $ price.

When you order something built, you pick the EMP file, the direction you want it to face on spawn, and how many of them you want.

So what's the current status of the game? Is the fourth player showing up?

How exactly do I make a map for the game? I'm currently fumbling just trying to make a decent sized map with two people opposite each other. :|

There isn't really any way to play singleplayer anyway, unless you want to make a server with two teams and play both of them yourself.

Though, if you're interested we now have enough people showing interest for two games - one with you, Toriad, and BluarianKnight, and one with me, SJ, and Girlinhat (assuming she wants to play).  Opinions?

I was just waiting for the last player; not sure what'll end up happening, whether we do a 1v1v1, 1v1v1v1, or two 1v1v1s.

I'm trying to play with a friend. So any help with that would be appreciated.
