Ah, so you build loose. That's good to know. It also means my strategies to build up my ship won't work. I assume explosive bolts can't be attached after building, they need to be built as a single unit.

Now I also understand why you would want electromagnetic clamps.

Explosive bolts can't be built as loose parts because they do not have the "core" ability, and thus cannot form a ship on their own.
If you manually edited your PLR to have it build a solitary explosive bolt, the bolt would vaporize immediately and do nothing but jack up your team's "losses" tally by $2 while reducing your fabber's stored value by $2 :)

Suggestion for a part: Cross Struts - effectively a hull strut in the shape of a gunport, able to span directly E-W instead of being tilted N or S.

Also, that picture of the strut chain used to weld the reactor, is essentially exactly what we needed to explain how it works.

Okay, next question. Recyclers. I assume it recycles loose parts. Do I have to grab hold of it somehow or does it just need to be in the same hex as my ship to be recycled?

You need to be in the same hex and travelling at the same speed after acceleration (IE: end up in the same hex as the debris next turn too)
The item must be unowned, but can be a whole ship if you like.

Docking has the same requirements, although it also allows ships you own to be docked.

There's a few parts that vanish when they're the only item on a ship, like a single floating explosive bolt will vaporize when left alone.  Otherwise, if it's debris you can salvage it!

Jumping in on the question after SJ's post:

I haven't actually ever used recyclers but I believe what SJ refers to above as unowned = no active cnc & hence classified as debris.
This can be a detached part as you suggest or could be a whole ship with the cnc all turned off turning it into a derelict.

If you detached a chunk of your ship and each half had cnc in it and also power in those parts, that would still be owned.

Recyclers are really just fabricators with really low build rate and storage, but really high scrap rate. Yes, you can recycle stuff with a fabricator, too! You only get 50% of its price back, though, as opposed to 90% with a recycler. A recycler is also really cheap, too. The downside of a recycler is that it is horribly inefficient at building stuff on its own (1 build rate, compared to 100 for a small fabber), and it has a very low storage capacity, so you can't build anything expensive using a recycler without welding pieces together.

I kept producing ship parts, and trying to grab them and attach them, but... it got weird...  And now I can't turn on my new ship!

There's a problem with using the Hull 3's and the docking. SJ explained it last night on IRC and Im not sure I understood to be honest.

What I "think" he said was, the ship is getting docked and then because there are hull 3's both sides of the dock the line of structure is reading back down from the ship to the base and thinks it cant hold the base so is dropping it.

That seems to be what happens, as it quickly docks and undocks my ship...  I'll probably have to make a single computer to attach on quickly, and use it to enable the bridge.
