Oh, Ed.  You shouldn't write off your base yet!  Its still worth at least a little bit, strategically.

I was mostly intending to fortify local space with powerful gun platforms, rather than force of fighters.  Vessels get cheap and powerful when they don't have to move very quickly.

ThancsTrek2 game is getting down to the endgame now.
Serious damage to the port nacelle, shields and deflectors all starting to collapse, crew overwhelmed with 500 hull damage, and ablative chaff isn't effective enough to stem the tide of hits.  I can't get close enough to use the octoEMP bomb, and don't have enough gun in a single arc to damage Crowe's shields.

We're drifting at speed 50, and have reached coords (0,3700) :)

Are you guys still playing this? I've recently downloaded and had a look and this seems interesting.

We're "playing" but USEC isn't taking his turns so it's taking 48 hours per turn on a 6 player game...

Sorry! I haven't played a game recently, so I'm still trying to get back into the swing of things.

Well, I just mentioned THANCS (and linked to this thread) in the Gratuitous Space Battles forum on Steam... wonder if anyone will bite? :P

Girlinhat: Nice turbolaser there :) Totally forgot you could Borg stuff onto your base using the spacedocks - I was wondering what all those floating components were for!

I forgot this as well.  That was not actually my intention, but now that I realize this can be done, this is totally a great idea!  What I'm actually doing is constructing a vessel peacemeal, since the whole thing would be rather costly, I'm producing the weapon core systems first, then adding the engines and whatnot when money arrives.  At least I'll have a gun platform while waiting on a functional ship.

Designed the following ship, what do you guys think?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Total Armament: 4 x Medium Disruptors facing forward
4 x Light Lasers in two pairs each offset one hexside to each side.

Am I a bit lightly armed for the size?

Yeah. Needs a *lot* more gun.  You average 28 damage a turn on all arcs combined, but have 1140 shield health with 72 regen per turn.
Note: GirlinHat, the winner of the $60k game FFA earlier had 200dps on the forward arc, while the other players had closer to 100.
Also, a warning; those disruptors fire a blob of damage 3 tiles wide, so the irises won't be wide enough and you'll take damage whenever you fire them.

Solid defences on the front 3 arcs, but the aft 3 are quite open.  You will need more speed and turn rate to prevent the enemy from getting behind you.
Side thrust, even if it is small, comes in very handy for combat manoeuvers and docking.
There is not enough energy production to keep the shields up.  You'll probably have to use the fabber to build more reactors for it later in the game.

How much damage do charge disruptors take from shooting?

Anywhere from zero to 105% or so.
I made a spreadsheet to try and figure out the exact numbers earlier, and there should only be about a 10% chance of them dying from firing a single shot, but somewhere in the 75-90% chance from firing both shots.

Huh, it's random? How'd you do that? Overlapping damage blob hexes that do 0.5 damage each?
