THANCS - a Newtonian space TBT
« on: October 12, 2013, 09:27:17 pm »

THANCS (Tactical, Hex-based And Newtonian Combat Simulator) is a turn-based tactics game in which you can design and build spaceships, and use them to fight.  At the moment it is mostly dead, and can only be played as PBW, but it's easy to set up a game for a small group.  It is mainly played in two ways: either each player starts with a fleet and they fight a deathmatch, or each player starts with a constructor/carrier ship and they gradually build up fleets.

Ships are built arbitrarily on a hex grid, with different parts being different sizes, shapes, and costs.  A ship's acceleration, turn rate, and price are all affected by what parts are on it, so the design is a tradeoff between these things and having more stuff.  The location of a part on the ship impacts what it can do, its effect on movement, and how likely it is to take damage, so that must also be considered in the design as well.

Spoiler: Ship Design Examples (click to show/hide)

Ships move on a larger hex grid, each hex of which can hold an arbitrary number of ships.  Linear motion is conserved (though rotation is not - after a turn you won't keep spinning until another in the opposite direction), and manuver is very important due to protection, firing arcs, and movement being affected by facings.  Ships, when hit, will recieve damage along the path of the hit, each individual impact absorbing only part of the beam's energy.  While heat is not modeled, energy is, and power management for both individual ships and the whole fleet is an important part of any protracted game.

Game site (goes down randomly)
Windows users will need to download "THANCS+mods+graphics.rar" and extract it anywhere, as well as getting "freeglut.dll" and putting it in the "dlls" directory of the THANCS folder.
Linux/Mac users download "thancs-gui_source.rar", extract it, and then get "mods.rar" and "graphics.rar" and extract them into the corresponding subdirectories.  Run "THANCS-perlgui.pl" to run the game.

Games are hosted on the Space Empires PBW site, which surprisingly enough also does the Space Empires series.  How it works is basically - the server processes a turn, then generates a ".gam" file which the players download, then they make their orders and upload their ".plr" order files to the server for processing.  It's fairly longform, with matches easily lasting 100 turns at usually only 1-2 turns per day.

The game manual is here.
Here's a writeup (not by me) of the first game I played in - which was the first game of everyone involved, but still went well overall.

Forum post with lots of information on ship design here.

So, anyone interested in a game?  In my experience, ideal gamesize is 2-4 players, with up to 6 or so also working if everybody is on top of things and runs turns regularly.  Carrier games (where everybody starts with nothing but a constructor ship) also are ideal for getting a feel for the game before everyone has built up a whole big fleet.  I'd also be glad to offer any design or other advice (you can design ships without being in a game), or even sit out a game if people would rather do it without an experienced player in there unbalancing it.

Notes:
  • You can save a screenshot in either the shipdesigner or the game itself with shift-s (which also saves ship designs, so be careful)
  • When designing ships, use the "stock" mod.  This is the same as "stock v3" on the servers, and is the newest version.

Assuming I could get my head 'round the technical bits, it sounds like a smashing good time; forgive me, though, when I search PBW (Play-by-Web?) it seems to come up as synonymous for play by e-mail.

Play by e-mail is fine by me, but as you mentioned both modes I'm assuming that's not what you meant?

EDIT:  Trying to go to the pbw link brings up an error message  :-[

PBW is in fact play-by-web; it lets more people play more conveniently than PBEM and works better for simultaneous-turn games, basically instead of emailing around savefiles they are uploaded to a server which process the turn and puts up the next turn's state.

The error message reflects "a problem with the SQL server"; not sure what exactly the problem is but it was not present earlier today.

Wow, this looks like a more complex version of Begin2! Might look into it at some point. How many people are playing, or how easy is it to get a game going?

Not sure how many are playing, but there have been no new PBW games in the last week or so (though several are going on, and who knows how many PBEMs).  It's probably not very fast to get the players, though I haven't tried to do so except for here.

It's more of a long term game if I did not make that clear; there is one game that has gone on for 1200 turns (~400 per player) and over a year, though most are probably shorter.

I would be up for this. I created a ship and all, and am trying to test it out against myself-- but, after searching for so long, all I come up with is nada; I can't figure out how to create a game/savefile to play with. I assume there has to be a method, to facilitate PBEM gameplay, but for the life of me, I can't find this 'option'.

There is a file called something like "initial-plr.exe", it opens up an interactive command line tool that lets you set up games.  Not too familiar with it, but you can at least add ships and money to the different player-slots.  Unless you're running the uncompiled Perl file; if that is the case, I have no idea how to do so.

Aye, it lets me create a PLR file, and reading the PBW site, it seems that this file is somehow turned into a .gam file. That is all I managed to figure out so far.

EDIT: I asked on the IRC, and the host app is not available. So, PBW is the only option. Anyway, I am up for playing this game.

Have you tried putting the PLR in into the savegame folder, then using the game to try to open it through the savegame function?  I can't test it, because I am on Linux and running the version from source, but that might work.  If not, I'll ask on the forums of the PBW site, which seems to be the only related forum out there.

I did; It doesn't show up. Downloading another .gam file does, so I know it's in the right folder. I guess we just have to wait for the dev to upload the application or something, to turn the plrs into gams.

The manual totally doesn't say what files to download. Hmm.

I wonder if the AutoHost program is what's needed to make .gam files? Oh. Hmm.

Redownloaded, same result.

Edit: The main game doesn't have a 'new game' option? That's weird. How do you even anything.

The autohost is throwing errors at me.

You can get the unbroken rar from the pbw website, look under the support tab, autohost script. Should be there.

I posted a thread on the PBW site asking about it, but my provisional idea of it is that the autohost program, would let us run a game, or we could go through the PBW site for it.  If no information comes from me asking over there, we might as well start a game on the site and try to blunder it out.

Once this is done, I'm (hopefully) writing a manual on how to actually get the game started.
The autohost is throwing errors at me.
You need to install perl for it to work, is the problem that it can't find perl514.dll? If so, go here and install the latest version of perl 5.14.

There is some useful information on these pages, though not complete and mostly relating to running Space Empires:

I'll try downloading perl. Man, so much headache, but I really like how the game might play.

Anyway, I am 'ethermeister' on the PBW2 site. Add me or something, so we can play. I hope.

Grabbed the game, probably gonna spend a day or two mulling over the functions of the shipbuilder.  Anyone up for a game when we get things figured out?  Would really like to be able to set up teams and have small competitions.
