to people asking about building a pc
« on: October 11, 2013, 08:24:43 pm »

I see a bunch of threads with this so I thought I'd make 1 to give an answer.

tomshardware.com

every few months they make a new post about building a gaming pc for the best buys. 3 tiers, budget, middle, and waste of money (my name for it). Budget is about $650. I built the middle one about 1.5 years ago. Only change I made is they threw in the top of the line graphics card at the time. Top of the line is generally a waste of money, so I went down 1 tier to save some cash. I also bumped up to 8 gb RAM (at the time they had 4 gb) cause I could get 4gb RAM at microcenter for $40.

There is a very good forum for building PCs. go there and post your budget and people will give you links. They really like newegg. They will link to specials. I would double check prices against Microcenter. I found (when I build my PC) that intel cheaps were alot cheaper there.

This is a great place to get info on building a PC.

Also note that when asking about a new PC, you need to be as specific as possible about its intended use. Even saying "gaming" is not terribly specific: you want to play RTS games like Starcraft? FPSs? Which ones, as there's a major difference between ArmA and BF4, for instance. New games, old games, what's the weight of each in your play schedule?

Reason being, these things matter in determining how to balance the expenses. Tom's can give you a good generic blueprint, but its up to you to figure out how to tweak it to best suit your needs. We can help, but only if you guide us.
