Guess we retreat and call upon Pearl and Co. Keep an eye on the well for as long as possible. Wahahaha, another reptile head for the collection, will need to learn how to preserve these.

we should definitely retreat. our flimsy spear will be no match for a slithering serpent.

You retreat, calling for help, giving the white serpent time to ascend to the top of the well.

It rears up about a man-height above the opening, a coil slipping out and around to encircle and grasp the outside of the well. Its weaving head follows you, but it pauses when it spots the three women erupting from the guard tower behind you. Its mouth yawns open to hiss and four fangs extend from its upper jaw.

we have two choices right now. we can either drop some of our loot (preferably some of our salamander meat) in an attempt to placate the creature, or we can flee as fast as we can away from it on the small chance that it will not give chase. Either way, we should avoid combat with it at all costs.

+1, not sure it is a Lindworm but meh, I know little of dragons and reptilian beasts.

-1. No one is carrying salamander meat, the only person carrying anything salamander is one carrying the least, and I don't think anything else we have will help. Edit: Plus it got up that well quick enough, we probably can't out run it.

good point, Cain12. I forgot we didn't keep most of the Salamander meat.

Basically, Lindworms are serpenty dragony things from Norse mythology, often said to inhabit holes, wells, grottos, or secluded forests. Often venomous, and prone to eating children. I don't know if that's what we're dealing with here, but that's what I'm going on.

Sounds similar enough that it could be one.

You continue your retreat into the guard tower. Claire fires an arrow as she backs inside, missing completely. Charlotte, nude save for a blanket gripped in one hand and a dagger in the other, hurls the dagger and also misses completely. She also retreats inside. Pearl has a dagger in hand but doesn't throw it, just retreating into the guard tower. The serpent slithers forward, its jaws snapping shut again and again on air inches from your flesh as your party retreats.

You, Pearl, Claire, and Charlotte are in the bottom floor of the guard tower. There are bunks scattered around and a steep staircase going up to the second floor. There's a small wood stove at the back that went unnoticed in the first search, which now has a merry fire going inside.

Claire's pack, Pearl's satchel, and all of Charlotte's gear is on the floor in front of the wood stove.

Everyone except Charlotte is covered in dried blood, and Pearl is also grimy with coal dust. The white serpent is outside the open, doorless doorway, advancing quickly.

Go up the stairs, have everyone snatch what weapons they can and follow. If it follows us through the doorway, we might see how long the beastie is from the bridge. If it's long enough, it's head will be in the guard tower and its body will be sticking out the door...

If not, we have a path to run through that will be difficult for it to catch us.

If it is a Lindworm, then I just realized where those scorch marks came from...

The women are fastest, hurling themselves up the stairs: Pearl, Claire, then Charlotte. You escape up the stairs behind them, and you're halfway up by the time the serpent gets through the doorway and reaches the foot of the stair. Directly below you is the sturdy hatch that seals off the stairway; the hatch is open.

Everyone except Charlotte is covered in dried blood, and Pearl is also grimy with coal dust. The white serpent is inside the lower floor with some of its body extending out the front door.

Distract the head while the more competent fighters attack the exposed body.
