I have a feeling the gremlins must be close, since everything seems to be avoiding this area.

You trek up the road branch to the south, up the hillside, to the ruined wooden structure. Among the trees up here the hard winter light casts the shadows of skeletal tree limbs.

The compound is a cluster of wooden buildings with a long central courtyard. Their backs face outward, and the whole outside has a palisade up against these back walls. The heavy wooden gate is split open in the middle wide enough for a person to comfortably step through. The buildings' roofs are stone tile, but the structure underneath must be warped and sagging, because the roof lines bend and bulge making the grey tiles look like the scales of a lizard. All the window shutters and doors are open and empty and the building interiors are dark. Curtains of pale green moss hang everywhere and sway in the breeze.

The whole courtyard is full of scattered debris, partly buried under drifted leaves and the packed dirt of many decomposed Autumns. There's a low, open, circular stone wall at the center of the courtyard.

The area is quiet.

You're outside the ruined wooden compound at the front gate.

Claire, Charlotte, and Pearl are here. Everyone is completely covered in blood. The dazzling winter sun shines at the top of the eastern mountains, surrounded by an enormous halo.

This must have been the so-called 'Springa Inn'. Although it seems as if this place has been abandoned for some time, This might be a suitable shelter for gremlins to inhabit. I suggest we take a lookk around, just to be safe.

"How big, exactly, is a Gremlin?"

Pearl whispers, "I've never seen one in the daylight before or up close at all. Rumors say anything from child-size to man-size, depending on the teller. But they run at a crouch and hunt in huge packs."

Claire has been looking all around the ground and now points out a soft print that features a small palm and three fingers pointed generally forward. It's hard for you to spot them but she points all around on the ground.

You slip through the gate one by one, looking all around. The low circular wall in the center of the courtyard is a well. You identify fragments of a wooden lid that match up with the circumference of the circle. The well is dark past the 15' you can see in the dawn light.

The compound is arranged like this, with descriptions you can tell from the outside:

                                            [North, overlooks bridge]

Two-Storey     Tall Square Building     Open Space

[West, overlooks cliff]    Barn                      Well                    Entrance Gate    [East, down to road]

                                Large Shed           Lodge              Cottage

                                                    [South]

You're at the well. Where would you like to search?

The area is quiet.

Claire, Charlotte, and Pearl are here. Everyone is completely covered in blood.

Try the shed first. Stuff is stored in sheds.

Do we have any kind of light we could drop down a well? Grab a loose piece of wood and light it up maybe?

We have a lame torch. if we were to find a smaller plank, we could in theory light it up and drop it into the well. I do suggest we check the shed.

You look around for a plank you can light. There's plenty of twigs, but the chunks from the well cover are too chunky. You could peel a board from one of the buildings and try to break it along its length.

You grab a bunch of twigs and twist them together into a little twig-cage-torch, stuff the inside with dry grasses and leaves, light it with your Engraved Lighter, and toss it into the well.

The wavering circle of light falls past the well's rugged stone walls. With all the shadows, smoke, quick descent, and the bad viewing angle, you can't tell much about the walls. The brand falls about 30' and lands on some leaves, which begin to burn and smoke. The smoke begins to rise slowly out of the well. The well is about 4' across.

You check out the shed in the SW. It has a stone rear wall with some kind of forge or furnace built into it. The roof and side walls are wood timbers with vertical planks on the walls and horizontal planks on the roof, holding up the slate tiles. The front is open. Very rusted forge implements hang on the walls and are laying on the ground, sometimes embedded in the dirt and leaves.

The forge itself is clearly of much higher quality than the stone wall behind it. It looks like it was made out of a single huge stone.

Between the barn and the shed there's a roof extension that collapsed onto a bin of coal.

The compound is arranged like this, with descriptions you can tell from the outside, or a more detailed italicized description if you've explored it:

                                            [North, overlooks bridge]

Two-Storey     Tall Square Building     Open Space

[West, overlooks cliff]    Barn                      Well                    Entrance Gate    [East, down to road]

                                Smithy Shed          Lodge              Cottage

                                                    [South]

You're at the shed.

The area is quiet.

Claire, Charlotte, and Pearl are here. Everyone is completely covered in blood.

What kind of forge implements? A rusty piece of iron on a stick is still a heavy piece of iron on a stick. Would make a good bludgeon if it's not inconveniently sized.
