You suggest to Pearl that the group take the remains of the salamander back to the goblin camp to trade. She says, "We could, but I don't know how much we'd get for it. We've been slowly siphoning off their coin for some time and they're starting to get tightfisted. Whether that means they all have light purses or they've caught on to our tricks, I doubt we'll be able to sell much back there."

You decapitate the salamander's head and pick it up, but it's kinda heavy. You might want to make some "equipment decisions".

You're in the river tunnel, on the riverbed. Upriver is east, downriver is west. The cut-out road is to the south. Across the road to the south is a smaller side tunnel.

(Inventory rule rewrite: Items in containers now count toward carry capacity. Items must be carried in hand or in containers - if you have a dozen items just on your person you're carrying them all in your hands and it's a mess to deal with. Worn clothes altogether now count as 1 item.)

In light of this strange shift in reality, Claire offers to carry the salamander hide and head, and the girls drop off the meat sacks for later retrieval.

Claire, Charlotte, and Pearl are here. Everyone is completely covered in blood.

Lying on the ground here is:
Sack [10/10]: 10 Raw Salamander Meat
Sack [10/10]: 10 Raw Salamander Meat
Sack [10/10]: 10 Raw Salamander Meat

You all climb up onto the road and check out the side tunnel to the south. There's no longer a red glow. By the light of your still-lit Lame Torch, you see that the side tunnel used to be sealed by a great door which has been melted and forced open. Beyond is a large room about the same dimensions as the riverbed tunnel, parallel to it, but only about 40' long, and the floor is level with the road. The whole interior is charred and the roof is encrusted with soot. There's burned and melted debris everywhere.

A mouth protruding from the near east wall whispers a sibilant phrase over and over in some language you don't understand.

On the far west side, the farthest from the entrance, there is an especially-blackened area around a square alcove in the wall. A shimmering sheet of energy covers the alcove and there's a rectangular white chest inside. The area inside the alcove is completely unburned, clear of dust and debris.

(It's not exactly a molten corridor. More like a long, charred room 40' east-west and 20' north-south. It's warm but not especially hot.)

Well this places seems neat, we need to find/use a camp or safe spot to drop off things like the head, meat, and book (well maybe not the book, depends on what it is) eventually, not sure what you mean by leadership crap.

Investigate alcove?

+1, Yeah not like we are short on salamander meat, worst that I see happening is that we lugged the meat about for no reason.

Put some salamander meat in the wall-mouth.

Ask the women if they have any clue what the thing is first. If they don't tell you feeding the mouth would be stupid or suicidal, go for it.

You ask whether any of the women have seen something like this. Charlotte and Claire both peel their eyes away from the mouth - you notice they were staring at it with worried looks on their faces. Pearl asks them where they've seen it. Charlotte taps her throat and makes a pulling-away motion. Pearl turns to you and says, "They saw this in the wizard Durden's mansion."

You get some scraps of salamander meat from outside and walk up to the wall-mouth. It doesn't pause in its whispered litany. You shove some meat in but it just falls out. It doesn't look like there's a throat or anything, just lips, teeth, tongue. The mouth isn't interrupted in the slightest.

EDIT: Oh right. You check out the alcove a little closer. The alcove is a cube shape cut into the wall, about 4' across, starting from just below hip height to just above head height. There's a shimmering field of light covering the opening, flush with the wall. Outside, the area is especially charred and blasted, but inside was unaffected. Through the wavering screen you see inside the alcove a rectangular white chest, flat top, about 4' across and 3' deep but only 2' high. It has a red latch on the front of the lid but no obvious lock. Attached to the ceiling of the alcove above the chest there's a thick white disk, palm-sized, with a tiny blue light in the middle. As you examine closer you notice all around the entrance to the alcove, just behind the shimmering screen, there's a thin white strip inlaid in the alcove wall with tiny blue lights inset in it at regular intervals.

Claire, Charlotte, and Pearl are here. Everyone is completely covered in blood.

I take it that the shimmering wall is a sort of force-field. the white disk is a biometric device/lock (palm-reader or retina-scanner) The thin white strip is probably a conduit that connects to the disk, turning off the force field when certain criteria are met.
Also, since we cannot open the field, I suggest we leve the room and continue following our original course to the gremlins.

To what plate do you refer? The one that is behind the force field?

Could try touching it or throwing things at it, salamander head, rocks or the handful of bugs? To confirm force field-ness.
If we give up we could listen to the voice some more, try to learn the phrase.
Could try to wipe the blood off on the ground or walls of something, don't want our only clothes to have dried blood all over them.
