Species: An in-progress game where creatures evolve.

Species does what Spore-tendon't! (or something)
Species is a simulator game where you get some gross-ass worm creatures, and watch as they evolve into different forms to survive their enviroment.

Here's the site, it has screenshots and stuff.

Hey guys! I'm the lead development organism on Species. I noticed a traffic spike and followed it here. Like a stalker. Or a bear. Or a giant sponge. MADE OUT OF BEARS.

You might be interested to know that reading the Dwarf Fortress Wiki has actually been one of my inspirations for a number of planned features, including a biochemistry-inspired metabolism and per-body-part circulatory and damage systems.

Obviously the fact that Species is visual rather than text-based limits what we can do without causing the computer to go belly-up, and the most complex systems are still a long way off from being implemented (I need to focus on more basic simulation elements like mass and volume first) but I have high hopes for the future.

Thanks for noticing us, here and in the other thread!

This looks great.  I've been awaiting something like this for a long time!

I liked seeing how the plant species shifted with the transformation in climate, as well.  Something that would be nice to see eventually would be very large maps with potentially many biomes - say some tundra waaaay up in the north, and some blazing hot desert in the middle, and so forth.

Edit: I'd also just like to extend my warmest appreciation for making something that isn't Spore and shows so much potential.  This is like what Spore wishes it could have been.

I remember this. I think I 'played' for about a week and then wandered off. I'll have to check back in.

Oh, hey, saw this before. I watched for a bit and the game got overtaken by horrifying giant purple spiders that moved like nightmare demons. Nope nope nope. I never returned.

So I messed with this, it's pretty awesome tech-wise.  I enjoyed it, and hope to see more in the future!

First thing I noticed was the awesome design of everything. All the options having tooltips was nice, too.

The game was actually very interesting. My first world ended up with giant worms that eventually all died out, probably because I drowned and then roasted them all. My second world crashed when I tried to max all the settings. :D

I see no point in starting a new topic, therefore ARISE YE OLD THREAD! Search engines are good.

Just so everyone knows, a new update (1.6.1) was released recently. It's nearly had all the bugs ironed out. The last thing on Qu's list of things to do is fix a bug where everything stares North when you're not looking, which should hopefully mean that eyesight becomes a very good advantage.

Why do people keep mentioning spore? This game doesn't attempt Spore gameplay, it only makes use of one Spore mechanic.

It is a very interesting toy though.

My issue is that everything looks creepy to me.

Creepy things are to SPECIES what horrible violent death is to Dwarf Fortress.  ;)

People mention Spore because this is what people hoped Spore would be :v

I should look at this again, it just keeps getting cooler and cooler.
