Windurrs update stall (fixed)
« on: October 10, 2013, 12:44:05 pm »

Windows 8 has been "installing update 12 of 17" for over 4 hours now. It's an update-and-restart process, so I can't do anything on my computer. I'm reasonably sure that it will never finish installing if I just leave it. The question is, what do I do? I'd like to actually do things with the computer today, so prompt help is appreciated more.

I did try googling it, and I do know there's a general computer help thread.

EDIT: The drive light (or whatever it's called - cylinder label) is lighting up intermittently, if that's significant info.

Hmmm turning it off should fix it but could also break the windows install if a sensitive part is updating.

Tho its been doing that for 4 hours i think update has crashed and theres nothing else really to do.

Yeah, it's still at it - 10 hours now. Just hold down the power button until it hard shuts down you mean, right?

Install Gentoo yeah, that's how you do it. Worst case scenario, the install's broken and you hopefully are able to boot into safe mode and system restore (or similar method) back to before it happened then disable the updates or something if you think it'll happen again.

It might've happened because I tried to put it into sleep mode (softly) during the restart screen (before the update itself) because it was taking a bit of time. It seems silly to think it would be so touchy though.

I had this issue last night. I'm running Windows 7 64-bit.
After a hard shutdown during the update, the computer then booted and installed the update no problem.
...Anyone else seen this recently?
