4 Months of playing (Question Time!)
« on: October 10, 2013, 11:15:42 am »

Here is a list of all the questions I have about the game over the past 4 months.

1. How do I train my military effectively fast? I have been training my military for about 5 years, and I do not have any legendary fighters I have several profitient and skimming fighters and 1 master but I do not have any legendaries what is a faster way to level them up?

2. How do I order my dwarves to clean up blood? I had a large siege earlier and went up against about 30 infected (Corrosion Mod) thankfully none of my soldiers died but several were bit and turned to my hospital turned into a blood bath. The infected soldiers are all dead now but the beds are all soaked in. Blood how do I fix this? And we'll is my entrance to my fort.

3. What is more important fishing or hunting? I tend to have 35% of my population be fishermen anything I could have them do instead?

4. Iron Armor how effective is it? My current military has full iron armor suits how protected will they be?

5. When I make alerts why do some of my civilians disobey orders?

I'm not a total expert, but here's what I've got:

1)  Having them train in pairs tends to make them spar more often.  You can build a danger room if you really want to maximize their skills, but it feels like cheating to me, so I dont.

2)  The easiest thing is to remove the bed and replace it.  For the floors, the dwarves might end up cleaning it themselves.  If you dont want to wait, put a constructed floor over the blood and then remove it.  That will make the blood pool vanish.

3)  Hunting is better since it gives you leather as well as food, as well as training up crossbow skills.  I tend to do neither after the first year or so since it leaves dwarves vulnerable to sieges/ambushes.

4)  Iron armor is good.  Steel would be better, but having all iron armor & steel weapons is a better route if you dont have enough steel to go around.

5)  I dont know for this one.  I like to think its Darwinism at work.  It usually doesnt happen too often for me though, so someone else could answer it better than I could.

Well, I'm likely less experienced than you but I watch a lot of tutorials and read a lot and have my tiny bit of experience but I have some of the answers I think.

1. I assume that you've set a training schedule and have designated Barracks (for melee) and Archery Range (for marksdwarves).  You can also set up a Danger Room to rapidly train melee.

2. I think the Cleaning task will take care of blood but as it is a very low priority anyone who has any other task (such as hauling) will do that first.  Try setting a dwarf to just be your cleaner.

1) Real combat. That or danger rooms (look it up) if you're feeling haxy.

2) Make a burrow, assign some dwarves, and turn off all of their labours except cleaning. Magma.

3) Dwarven fishers will deplete the worlds fish populations in about five years time. Depending on how your world is set up, it may be longer or shorter than that. Hunters will do the same eventually too. The most reliable long term food sources are, in descending order: Farms, eggs, and livestock. Always keep a breeding pair of animals if you go the butchering route.

4) Iron's good enough, and probably better than what those damned hippies your foes will have equipped.

5) Burrows only limit where a dwarf works. So they'll only clean, build walls, cook, clean, etc. in the burrow. They'll On Break and No Job anywhere they damned well please.

Honestly I prefer live training to danger rooms... just as good, only a little more required setup and preparation, and not as dubious.

This, full suits of armor, training weapons, and undead crundles.

Alternative to that, one time three of my marksdwarves trained up to legendary hammerers after chasing a single ant-woman around the caverns for an entire month, she was probably legendary dodger by when she finally died.

The rumour has it that setting up archery range that overlaps with barracks makes your dwarves shoot at targets more often.

Also - burrows don't work just for restricting workplaces, as someone seemed to suggest, but you need to use (a)lerts in (m)ilitary menu to confine your dwarves to certain area so make sure you are doing it the right way.

Setting up a meeting area near contaminated place (via zone menu) helps - dwarves tend to clean places near their meeting areas often.

I also think you can't run out of mussels, I think, and they appear in aquifers, too... never done much fishing, though, so not sure about that.

Archery is really hard to get them to train. It's the difficulty of getting dwarves to train regularly, adn the trouble with getting dwarves to use crossbows as ranged weapons, combined. I prefer live targets, as they train much, much faster per-fired-bolt, and you know, they actually shoot.

Yes. If you can get some caged enemies/animals, have a pit to dump them in that crossbowdwarves-in-training can come up to the edge of to shoot down at them with wooden bolts. It's much faster than shooting at targets.
