I found out that Ashenzari really help in the abyss.
I mean, you get to see 20% of the tiles around you, and that helps much more than expected (seeing vaults and biggest threats), and she shows you the portals when they're near.
And She's great outside the abyss too :D

The advice I've received is to hit teleport early in the abyss. That way you can mostly avoid the bad monsters.

Teleport isn't always available in unlimited quantities. I've also found it really hard, and that was with a character who went there intentionally looking for the rune, after getting the Pan runes.

The only advice I can think of is don't even think about going there unless you have Fire/Ice Storm or Tornado and a reusable way to regain MP. If you end up there involuntarily then I have no idea how you can survive.  :'(

Actually, the time I went to Abyss was when the changes were still in Trunk and had not yet been put into the stable game, so I'm wondering if it was maybe an early experimental version where monster spawn rates were greatly increased before being toned down for the official release.

At any rate, I don't think I would have been able to survive with a melee character, as if I'd only been able to kill a maximum of 1 monster per turn, they would have been replenishing themselves quicker than I could kill them so I would have been unable to ever move. Even with Tornado (and a staff of channeling, Sublimation of Blood, and Makhleb to regain HP), I had to bail out of my first 2-3 attempts to get the rune because I just didn't have enough MP to keep up the killing for long enough to get through the swarms of monsters.

Yeah I think there are fewer monsters in the stable release, especially if you stay on abyss 1.  And if you're a melee character you don't need to worry about running out of MP (and if you have an axe you can still do pretty good crowd control).

Yeah, but I feel the abyss got a lot deadlier towards pure spellcasters, since the respawn rate of horrible stuff got upped. I know I've had a few troubles on Zinnite melees in there, let alone some poor Vehumet sod.

In other news, managed to kill off a KoVm in the Lair, since apparently you can't stand in melee with hydrae on non-gurgle casters. Who'da thunk it. My main mistake was probably going Sif Muna, since good ole' Vehu would've given me at least one non-poison attack spell, which would've forced me to flee from a lot less encounters, thus preserving a lot more consumables. Might cave in and go for a KoFe or something.

Ko also have pretty poor HP, so that probably didn't help.

The problem seems to be that the new monsters are almost all fast, which means that for weak characters the option of running is simply not there anymore. You are forced to eliminate the new abyss monsters which means all the demons you have been running from will catch on.

And the Blackmiths got their second win soon after ^^

HOFi of Beogh for me. Also it was my first win ever \o/

And I killed that damn Mennas (probably the most dreaded thing I met as I played demonspawns before this one).

I was really tempted to go to a 15 runer, zot was a cakewalk with 290hp and 50ish ac crystal plate & 3fire 2cold

TSO is ridiculously good in the extended endgame.  I made a few terrible mistakes but got bailed out by that sweet HP-for-kills every time.
