This round is confusing me. Despite all reason, I'm playing a Tengu Skald. The last few attempts have been mixed, to say the least. Then this round I've found:

+6 Ring of Intelligence
+7/+7 falchion "Egg" {drain, *Rage, +Fly}

...I'm torn on the stupid Falchion. +7 is awesome, by all accounts, and Drain has its uses.
Then +Fly is unnecessary (being a Tengu).
...And I'm not sure I like *Rage. I really don't see randomly berserking being fun to plan around.

Thoughts?

   If you have the one amulet that stops you from raging and you don't have anything else for the slot it would fix your problems. That or anything else that would stop rage but the amulet is the one that came to mind first for me. If its of the weapon type your using and you don't have anything better using your amulet slot to keep it under control till you find something better isn't that bad of a trade. Though some others may have a better idea of what to do.

@Akhier:
You know how you only see Death Yaks at the bottom of the lair? Branch ends are always like that, except rune branches which are even worse. It's certainly doable but conventional wisdom is to clear a rune branch down to 4th floor and then go muck about somewhere else for a while. Remember that it's ok (even advisable) to switch between branches if you come across something particularly nasty.

@Xgamer4:
Uncontrolled rage will get you killed. If you're the kind of guy who would (briefly) wield a chaos brand for giggles, feel free to use it pre-lair. But I still can't recommend it. All it takes is one ill-timed rage and you're slow&exhausted against an orc pack. Seriously drop it by lair.

I'm actually kindof confused as to why people recommend Kobolds to beginners.  They're almost exactly the same as Halflings, but with less HP.

Playing a Ko is like having an intrinsic gourmand and sustenance. Because apparently food clock is a problem to some people.
I just like them because they're the underdog of every fantasy setting ever. And I love the idea of slaying an ogre and eating the whole thing afterwards.

I'm actually playing a KOAK stabber right now. I've never played a stealth/stabber before, so if anyone has any generic advice (skills, gear, tactics) before I splat this one, it'd be appreciated.
I've got a no AC robe (+str,+int) which I'll probably replace with leather, later with light dragon armour.
For weapons I've got a couple of branded daggers and a sabre of protection. I'm pumping all my enchantments on and plan to distort the sabre come midgame.
I'm putting skills into short blades and stealth. Once I've got sabre to mindelay I will switch to dodge and stealth. Basically stealth all game and whatever else I happen to be wanting at the time.

   I actually saw Death Yaks on the sixth Lair floor I think. Of course they weren't just wandering around, they had their own little easily fireballed island but hey, free xp is still xp.

Just played a Troll Monk of Vehumet. Because they are awesome to play.
I mean, Earth Magic is their second easiest skill, and with stone arrow, they're good.
And I got killed, by a Thrashing horror. The monster that didn't deal any of my other characters a single damage.
And I had 5/6 piety level for long ...
I hate you, the Abyss, you made me loose at least 10 tournament points. D:

They can spawn higher up, but they're guaranteed at the bottom. Same with elephants. And some tougher nagas in Snake, etc..

I always had the most difficulties in Snake, out of all the Lair's branches (Slime is special as you need more resists than for others, but otherwise isn't "that" hard)...
So yeah, no real surprise in dying there ...

I mean, even with gargoyles and their innate Rpois, it's not easy ...

Poison in DCSS isn't that bad compared to some other roguelikes. I guess they had to compensate that by not giving full poison immunity (few races excluded).

Holy crappity crap crap.

Is it too late to maybe change my team membership to the Bay 12 Cheesemakers of Impatient Idiots Who Suck?
Damn I suck. Awesome lajataur just thrown away due to overly casual play. I mean, crap.

Edit: Crap.

The joke is that he's already on the Chamions team :P

The richer joke is that I'm the captain, and I have the lowest score of everyone, as well as half the blacksmiths! Hopefully I can get settled into my new character instead of having YASD in Lair again.

Yeah, so my next dude got a Death Yak pack camping the stairs on Lair 1. Like, I go down the stairs, and death yaks, death yaks everywhere. And a water moccasin. Luckily, my next dude is a DEFE, so although I got down to 1HP, and had to burn a heal wounds pot, all my death yaks are belong to Yred. Sticky flame, I love you.

I was sick of mutations, so I decided to switch to Zin for my HOFi.  He's been reasonably good - virtually immunity to mutations, a mildly useful vitalization ability and a couple of "oh shit I am going to die next turn" moves are pretty useful.  His reciting does seem a bit lame but it's fun to use it against large crowds of demon.

Current progress: Got lair runes, vaults, abyssal, and four pan runes.  I think the icy guy Mnoleg is the one left over. I might switch back to TSO so I can lead a holy crusade against the tomb and hells.

Yeah, Zin's recite felt a lot more powerful in the trunk I 15-runed before my current win. One thing to note is that Recite is most effective against Humanoids, which basically means a free mid-game, since all the major threats are humanoid - Yaktaurs, Deep Elves, Giants of all sorts. Still, though, my previous game I managed to confuse CEREBOV.

Good luck with y'all's runs! I'm going to start my KoSu today, probably, if not tomorrow, not really sure how I'm supposed to build a summoner but hey, life's for experimentation.

I switched back to TSO for hells and tomb.  I had a few horrible near-misses but I ended up getting my 15 rune win.
