Looking back at Covenant's question - he's playing a Naga of Chei, so Haste and Swiftness are unlikely to be a good idea. I'd probably focus on translocations and try to buy both the Book of Spatial Translocations and Book of the Warp, that way you get Blink, Controlled Blink and Control Teleport, which ought to give you some of the escape options you can lose by following Chei.

I'm on D2 with a Spriggan Venom Mage, and I've already found a Staff of Poison, a +2 Ring of Evasion, and a Ring of Wizardry.

I'm very scared about just how wrong this might go...

   Well have to get to sleep but I managed to take first place for number of high scores with combos from quitrobin. Its twice as fast for something like that because each score I take from it is getting two closer. Of course someone called Neil also seems to be going for combos though I managed to increase the gap. I will probably be overtaken for a bit while I am off of the computer tomorrow if they target quitrobin's scores but I think I might be able to keep my total number of combos high.

So yesterday I visited mist-veiled cliffs and damp caves, saw cavedrawings of ancient aliens and spaceships [according to the guide] made of bat-dung, and all in all had a blast of a time.

Today, we crawl!

My GrGl hasn't died yet, just manufactured a +7/+5 Great Mace of Crushing from a plain +3 GM I found on Orc:4, decided that with a +14 platemail there's no point in going for heavier armour, so I'm trying to get some spellcasting in. The only problem is I have 7 scrolls of ench armour :| I'll probably just make a CPM and try to go for max armour on ascent, if it goes to that. Wonder if I can get my hands on a pearl dragon armour - but then again, I need 3 pips in all resists, and unless some miraculous jewellery spawns, it just ain't gon happen. Oh well.

Graven, you can also keep your scrolls for the possibility of a treasure trove, even if it is rare. there is a 15% they ask for a dragon armor with a +1 ot +5 enchant, that you can do with your scrolls

And yeah, that's the +8 large shield of Ignorance, right there. And with the armor penalty of the CPM preventing my spelcasting and my 11int, I think I will get it too

The "problem" with Chei is that you don't get Haste. Haste makes pretty much everything you do better. In terms of winning: Haste>No-Haste. It's a bit like Scythes. You can win the game with it but it's still not as good as the alternatives. But it's all good in the end, not everyone has to be MiFi of Oka->TSO 15-rune with haste+c.blink.

Losing haste is the real kicker.  The stat boosts and active abilities really aren't that significant compared to losing the best status effect in the game, and also being cripplingly slow.

I'd say that worshiping Chei is worse than worshiping no god in pretty much every case.  Blade hands transmuters may just about escape without having their damage output reduced, but they also lose a lot of the flexibility that being fast and having haste offers.

Yes, that probably is the learnaean hydra.  You should wait until you have a good weapon before fighting it.

The Lernaean Hydra does 18 damage per hit like other hydras - with 50 AC it probably wouldn't do that much to you. Try standing next to a 7 headed hydra for 4 turns and see how much damage you take. 

Or you could just lure it out of the vault and go grab the rune without killing it.

I spent turn next to 2 hydras, with swamp dragons all trying to hit and dragon breath at me : lost 2 HP per turn, roughly...
But anyway, I'll try to get a better weapon and a useful amulet, before going there.
In fact, I have no artifact other than my shield and the 2 rings I bough from a shop, so ...
