EDIT: Crises averted, spell duration ran out. Phew. Also, the last scroll was Remove Curse, so here we go!
Have they changed immolation? I thought it just did some fire damage to you on reading it. I've been away for too long...
Speaking of, I've heard references to Vault Guardians, or something like that, that don't let you leave one of the Vaults levels once you've entered. Could someone fill me in on what exactly they are, along with a bit of advice on how to deal with them? I've not encountered them yet, but they sound worrying.
My game's going alright - that is, after a few rocky starts with badly placed orc packs (and me not raising my Fighting skill early enough). And then nearly dying when I see 'Pikel, huh? Hmm, he's placed quite badly (three orc wizards around) and I'm low, I'll retreat to those stairs over there'. Then 'The inept staircase mimic grabs you'. Screw you too Crawl, screw you. Luckily, killing Pikel made his human slaves change allegiance and help me kill the orcs, so I survived that encounter.
Anyway, I've gotten down to D:7. Not before finding a Hill Giant on D:6 though (almost as fun as that game earlier tonight where Grinder was on level 3). Then I had a near-death experience running from Phantoms and Orcs, but all's well now and I'm back to hunting Prince Ribbit.
Yeah, apparently they changed Immolation this update to "Inner Flame on everything in LoS," which actually makes it a useful scroll if you're careful about it. Not so much if "every creature in LoS" includes "half a dozen puny orc minions," but there ya go.
There's three flavor of Vault Guards- basic Guards who are just tough, well-equipped humans, Convokers who recall many creatures on the floor to your location (it takes them time, kill them before they pull it off,) and Vault Wardens who are like tough Guards who can seal doors to prevent you from escaping (and new this version, they can also seal staircases.) The sealing wears off as soon as they're dead though, so if you prioritize them you should be able to handle things before it gets out of hand. The bottom of Vaults is trickier as a result though, and I have not braved it in the new version to know how to deal with it.
In Orc Swarm news, I managed to convert an entire warrior-led squad when the mooks all converted and the warrior surrendered. Best orc is Wulfoc the Knight, who has a dwarven long sword of draining and a crossbow of frost, while the other Knight is Berold who has a +2 +1 Flail of Protection. I do get too attached to my dudes, no question.
Just found a portal to a treasure trove on D:10. It wants 13 Teleport Scrolls, so that's very doable, especially since I found an amulet of Conservation early.
EDIT: Ninja'd by Will! The last one is Ironheart Preserver, and yes, they're modestly durable dudes who split damage with one of their allies.
