It just ends at a massive impassable void.

My totally random guess would be an infinite field of # chasms.

Sigtext. Enticing, yes? If you do not know where things I have "sigged" go, this page will explain.

I'd have guessed the camera would just stop moving in that direction, like with the edge of an embark site.
This happens.

Yep. You just get to a map area where the scrolling stops and where you can't step past the border. I've been there and there's nothing spectacular to see there. Nothing at all. Don't be worried about strange dreams and fables of sleeping things from beyond the stars.

That would actually be really interesting, a literal edge of the world, where even oceans fall away into black nothingness.

I can't be the only one who would first try alt-moving into that chasm, can I?

Knowing Belgium, everyone will vote for themselves out of mistrust for anyone else, and some kind of weird direct democracy coalition will need to be formed from 11 million or so individuals.

It's just the edge of the memory stored for DF, the black stuff is just unallocated tiles that the game didn't code in. adventure mode is kinda built like Fortmode but has a bit of coding that loads and deloads chucks if you move too close to the edge, other than that the game has a border that prevents units that migrated back in 40d from crossing they have to wait for you to unload the area they were in.  though you don't normally see this due to the game sets up shadows and a vision circle to hide this fact.
if you say use dfhack to reveal, you could see units bumping up against the border.

Although I'm sure that was a post about technical aspects of DF loading on-site and off-site units/memory, but for some reason I read it as "historical figures from 40d are trying to migrate into your world, the border was established, and now they collect at the edge like so many hungering zombies against a fence".

yes.

The old ones gather at the edge of the fort. They want to get in but they can't - they are no longer of this world. They exist merely as revenants of the past.
