I believe Valve removed all legit ways to enable mods in game for some batshit reason. Used to be able to use -enable_addons, and after they removed that you could specify it with something like -enable_addons "filename". Now there's nothing, only the quasi-allowed way where you force the mod to load but that's super sketchy.

More info here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Dota2Modding/comments/3kyzrj/likely_very_temporary_mod_loading_method/
Quote from: reddit
As of the 9/18/15 update, the -addon flag no longer functions unless you also specify the -tools flag.
Note that, as -tools prevents you from joining matchmaking or bot games, this means that this method no longer works for most purposes.

Goddammit volvo plz. First they make TF2 servers flat out refuse all client side mods because "le hackers be ruining teh gamez" and now this.

Yeah it's pretty lame.

I put in a lot of sound mods that I really liked (ESPECIALLY DUDUDUDU DARUDE SANDKING) and now I can't use any of them.

... there was a sound mod that made the sandking go dudududududu when it did the sandstorm? I think if I had known that I might have actually kept dota installed. And turned the sound on, which would have been something like a first since I played dota back in WC3 >_>

Not just that. It made every single one of his skills play parts of dudududu.

There were a lot of awesome and excellent sound mods. Crystal Maiden's Let it Go for her ult. DMX Shadowfiend. Dragonball blink sound. Titanic soundtrack losing theme. Nyancat Spirit Breaker charge. NBA Boomshakalaka Axe. MGS alarm sound smoke. Skrillex Witch Doctor. Etc.

You definitely could, but Skrillex seems thematically appropriate.

Sadly you can't any more.

It's why I don't play Sand King any more. It's impossible to play him after playing with the dudududu mod. It's just not the same. It's like if QoP of Pain had a mastectomy.

So what heroes do you guys like to play? I've been trying out different heroes on easy bot games and I'm not sure who to pick or main.

You can main about 10 different heroes, I'd say.

So at point am I good enough to be able to play with people and not expect to get yelled at for being a newbie? I've gone through the tutorials, played various games vs bots with different heroes, playing as a support, a pusher, a carry, a ganker, etc.

I've heard Dota is less toxic a community than League but mobas still don't have the best reputation when it comes to online multiplayer experiences and I'm hesitant to jump right in. I don't know much about the metagame since that's a thing learned from playing with people.

i wouldn't compare like that

go into co-op bot games, those aren't too bad

metagame is pretty much worthless especially when starting out and worthless until you are actually getting matchmaking with pro players

a quick glance at dotabuff confirms my suspicion that spectre is the current big hero

omniknight's got a better winrate, but he always does, perennial winner with abaddon and necrophos in pubs

but spectre's got better than abaddon and necrophos, so she's probs insane right now

so the meta is:

probably gonna be 5 carries anyway, let spectre farm

You can play with people starting from literally as soon as you understand the game. You might be worse then the average person, but that will just mean you go down in the rankings until you get to a point where you are about as skilled as everyone else. As long as you don't actually have brain damage, you are guaranteed to be able to find a bracket where you can play with everyone else.

It honestly sounds like you are better then the starting bracket, so you shouldn't have any problems.

And maining isn't really a thing, unlike league, since league requires you to buy runes for every hero you want to play. In DOTA you just play everyone until you find heroes who you like to play.

I'm at 1.8k mmr and that's low enough on the curve to find people with low triple-digit MMRs

I think I may have even seen double digit once

Never.

Remember the mute feature is your friend. Basically your best friend, if you're wading into pubs. There's no point short of maybe the absolute highest echelons of the game where you're not going to have at least some people shitting on you for whatever reason every few games (at more or less a minimum). Mute fast, mute hard, mute early. You don't have to listen, and there is no escape (short of only playing premades, anyway). Don't let it stop you, just mute anyone and everyone that starts to shit talk.

Other than muting everyone, you should endeavor to find a group of people who you like to play it with. Of course, this is significantly easier said than done as any experienced competitive online player can tell you.

Once you find a good group though, the game is a lot more fun.
