My first game against techies was against a team going mega tryhard by using the ages old tiny + techies combo and repeately killing our crystal maiden with it. But to be honest, in that game, techies have a rather low impact on things overall. They were losing but we took too long to push and their tiny got huge and our terrorblade sort of derped around for too long. My GPM was low overall due to having to give up camps and lanes to terrorblade so he would maybe catch up, so I was relegated to chomping a creep here and there for a long time.

That Terrorblade build is retarded.

Techies are evil. You don't see him for most of the game, then you leave your base and he oneshots you by stacking charges. Seriously, 2k hp, gone in an instant :C

My first game against Techies, I played Beastmaster. My friend played Nature's Prophet, and one of the other folks on the team played Invoker. All three of us had necronomicons by the end of the game, which we used to detect mines. I was also spamming hawks all game long to clear out our shops, runes, random ramps around the map, and their t3 towers. We pushed incredibly quickly, getting two lanes of barracks at about 25 minutes. Then they turtled like crazy and we spent another 25 minutes throwing bodies at their base until we inevitably won.

Such is life against the Techies.

Gah I need a map that shows most common taken paths for when I play techies. Just tried him the other day and not a single opponent ran into one of the minefields I set up with my scarce mana in the first 15 mins.
Ended up defending the t3 towers for a very long time until finally an ultra fed anti mage just strolled through and ate a dozen remote mines with his passive resistance. Unfortunately our team did not make a comeback despite having faceless void. :(

I don't know like this hero just burns through mana early on I'm finding it hard to contribute much until I get soul ring and a lot of regen on. Should I maybe try maxing suicide attack first and just sticking to lane, or go full on mines and roam?

Well, Wagamama was doing a 24 hour techies stream, and he is/was apparently the best Techies player in Europe, but he's on his last game right now.

Stream
Dotabuff, for match ID's.

Hopefully the Replays will add some knowledge, though not as much as watching him and his commentary.

Ha...

He's not very newbie friendly. It's why you often see people say when someone picks Techies, they're either super pro or super fail. You need to be very good at mana management. This means not only do you need to know how to properly calculate and spend your mana, but you also need to know all the mana maximizing tricks such as dropping int items when you activate soul ring or mana potions or bottle.

You also need to be very good at map awareness as that's how you'll be plotting your traps. So you need to know if there's a jungler, and what kind of route the jungler will take. Or what kind of gank paths the enemy will most likely approach you or your team by. You need to know what kind of escape route you'll be using so you can cover it several minutes in advance. Etc. etc. etc.

Lastly, you need to be very aware of how much damage all your skills do because this is a hero where you can't fuck up. If you didn't plant enough mines, all you will do is annoy an enemy and you wasted several minutes of work. If you pressed your suicide too early, you just died for nothing. Things like that. You need to know how to clear creep waves properly with the mine (drop mine, then autoattack every creep once unless they've taken damage prior). You need to know how to stack and pull creep camps so you're not boned when you have no farm.

Your best bet is to practice in bot games until you are completely confident in him. Your goal is not to kill bots, but rather to get used to this very weird hero. Otherwise you're just going to get wrecked nonstop.

-----

Waga's build is:

Null talisman and tangos -> soul ring -> mana boots -> whatever he feels like

Max mines, then max suicide. Ignore stasis trap until both skills are maxed. Get ult at normal times.

-----

My preferred skill build is:

Max mines, ignore stasis trap until after I get ulti, then max stasis. Unless I'm playing support, then I'm maxing stasis first.

I just had the most absurd comeback game against a team with a necro that was level 17 by 20 minutes due to infinite feeding from our mid bloodseeker, a void with free farm and and a techies that just roamed all game. Playing as warlock.

Its so absurd that I might just post the replay here, I'm not sure exactly how it happened apart from the fact necro got so much gold and experience that he got very kill hungry and didn't do much for the rest of the game other then picking off kills with his ult and a full dagon, while the void had some really odd deaths that didn't make any sense and techies did... something.

I hate where I currently am in the whole matchmaking thing: just short of ranked. Yeah, I'm aware there's stupidity aplenty in ranked but I don't think it can reach this level.

I pick lycan and go jungle as radiant. Ok. I start clearing out the camps, I go to clear the ones near the mid lane, drow (who is in mid) calles me trash for "stealing his farm". I ignore that and keep jungling. Small fight ensues in bot lane. I am hovering at about 100-200 hp. I'd get killed instantly if I were to go, so I don't. Cue more insults for not showing up. Then there is another fight and I go. I die and get yelled at. Then I get harassed at the jungle. Then team bitches about how I don't have items and when we lose, cue "report lycan". If I had been allowed to jungle in peace, then maybe things would've turned out differently.

Okay, based on your teammates, here are your priorities at your skill level:

1. Ignore your team
2. Don't die
3. Get farm
4. Push towers
5. Kill enemies

also I can't really imagine jungle lycan being that useful until you get vladmir
