I think my hidden unranked mmr is going up because people are getting whinier.  Same thing that happened in Smite.

You'd think the people that are more experienced would be the ones that enjoyed the gam-hahahaha I'm a funny joker.  Still, this is unfortunate.  At least I had a few brief months playing with calm individuals, unlike LoL where even the low-level players were all bitchy smurfs.

Though to be fair, mid mmr is also full of interesting players. The sort of people who go invoker radiance spooky build.

Just tried out Ogre Magi to see if the hero had any redeeming qualities.  The answer: no, no it does not.

The problem is multicast, of course, but not because of the unpredictability.  No, its because for whatever reason part of the skill scaling of Magi's three normal skills is built into multicast, which means prior to level 6 you've just got nothing.  On paper two nukes with a disabling component should be great, the problem is that neither of their damage scaling is great, and while a 1.5 second stun is ok it doesn't scale at all from leveling.  Bloodlust is probably the most useful out of the bunch but it has no real purpose in the laning phase.  Its honestly at the point where if multicast wasn't a thing I would suggest putting one level into each and then leveling stats because the scaling is that bad.  On top of that there's no good lane for poor Ogre Magi.  As a laning support, your ability set is well suited to either commit to a kill or countering an enemy who commits, the problem is that your abilities are too mana-intensive to throw out for harass and you're a melee hero with low damage; so most of the time you're just standing around or denying which you aren't even good at.  Offlane seems like on OK place for Ogre Magi but the short range and single target nature of its abilities is bad for flash farming and there's not much besides the hp pool to stop you getting zoned or killed.  Mid is probably the best place for Ogre Magi, but... why would you waste mid on Ogre Magi?

Once you get multicasting up the problems mostly go away; the mediocre damage counts for a lot more when scaled up x2-4.  Plus bloodlust can be applied to most of the team at the same time.  But still, Ogre Magi outside the laning stage is just... mediocre.  You've got a fairly mediocre skill combo you can use to gank a single target, you can apply weak buffs/debuffs to everyone on both teams, and you can spend 4k gold to get the game's latest developing stun combo online with unstable fireball, which will destroy your mana reserves if you ever use it.  Bleh.  The idea of a burst mage that just happens to have a bajillion health is great, but with weak escape options I wouldn't even describe ogre magi as particularly durable.

I disagree strongly about Ogre. I think he's a cool dude with a very specific niche. He's like Lina or Lion as a support but ready to go all the time. Pre level 6 you toss out W's like an asshat and force your enemies out of lane because it does stupid damage at huge range. Once you hit level 6... you keep doing that because Ignite is bullshit.

Plus, early game Ogre's base stats are disgusting for some reason. He has ridiculous strength growth which means he doesn't die, and for whatever reason his base damage is absurd. Only Treeant and Chaos Knight* (gotta love that 30 attack variance)  have better base attack damage. You can usually just punch people out.

Me and a friend like to run Tusk/Ogre midlane as a joke. I'll never forget the pure salt from an enemy Magnus one game when we just zoned him out behind his second tower. It was good.

Ogre is basically "run at them until they die or you run out of mana", mainly because:
Ignite is bullshit.

Stick an orb orb of venom on Ogre against a melee lane for shenanigans. Ignite and smack them for a ridiculous amount of slow + DoT. His stun is certainly not the MOST powerful stun early game (lookin at you, venge) but it packs quite a wollap. A reliable 1.5 second stun that cannot be disjointed is nothing to sneeze at. And sure, the damage isn't the complete best - but you can't just look at one part of someone's kit.

Ogre has decent early game with his high natural stats and good lane harass, and good late game with his powerful stuns and nuking potential (unrefined fireblast ftw), slows + DoT, and buffs. Bloodlust is incredibly strong (why are blood lusted towers a thing) when your entire team has it. He's the kind of hero who doesn't snowball the enemy team into oblivion, but has fairly powerful abilities that keep him in the game regardless of how well he's doing. I wouldn't call him a position 5 support, but he fills in as a powerful disabling support next to heroes like shadow demon and, as mentioned before, Lion or Lina.

But hey, you don't have to play him. There's a hundred other heroes to play as.

The only issue I can see with Ogre is that he needs levels and items to be useful, otherwise he's a waste of xp and gold.

Of course, I'm sure some of you are looking at it and going "that sounds reasonable", and you'd be right. But don't forget this is Valve. They can't even be arsed to police anything let alone their own systems. They're too lazy to get tech support. They're too lazy to get customer support. Look at Steam Greenlight. Look at the massive craphole their Shanghai Major became. Look at how they completely ignore all the guidelines they themselves set for every single thing.

Valve being trusted on this is like trusting a flan to guard your house. The day they'll actually moderate their new system is when Ubisoft's investors learn that DRM is fucking retarded.

Yeah, I've been thinking about how they could do this for a whiile and it was almost always "more cosmetics" or maybe just "show up on the leaderboard" or something.

See, my view would be the exact opposite of that, ha. I don't really care how much they bugger the base game, but if it's going to be touching the mods... well, my interest in reinstalling DotA2 just dropped pretty significantly. All for supporting the mod devs and whatnot, but that's what a donate button is for. Not making your custom content delivery platform P2W enabled :-\

Guess I'll keep an eye on it, but... ugh. Just ugh.

The Blog about Custom Game Passes from Valve

Valve deciding which custom games receive the passes suggests to me that the perks and bonuses from purchasing them will be regulated. Besides, if one of the developers made their custom game Pay-to-Win I'd imagine interest in the game would drop.

I'm tempted to say that so long as Valve limit the P2W to mods and leave the base game untouched, things will be fine. But this is Valve we're talking about..

I don't think Valve has ever implemented anything that was pay-to-win in one of their games.

TF2 had its moments, but usually if an unlock is so important as to justify spending money on it its emblematic of a problem in the game as a whole rather than the FtP model.  Like the Pomson.
