the problem is finding people who are about your skill level

umiman like i said i am 1.8k

looking at dotabuff you're somewhere in the range of 4-4.5k

...would you be willing to have me on your team

because i probably wouldn't, heh

seriously, I played with a smurfer whose actual mmr was 4.5k once and you can see how that went (the shadow fiend)

i was friggin cheering luna on by the end there iirc because of how feedy the other team was

I might have been good in the past, but these days I'm pretty shit. I only play with my friends and get carried while I troll around doing dumbass things.

Part of the whole MMR playing with friends is borked for me as well. I'm like 2.9 solo, but I never play solo anymore. my 2.5-6 party is better, even if I play with a 2k in party often.

To any of you, I'm down for some normal unranked, and yes, even with you Putnam, screw differences.

I find this game very hard to play, BUT, I've had a lot of fun watching competitive matches.  So, I've decided to dive back in and see if I can not totally suck.

First game against actual humans.  Well, this time at least.

I originally wanted to go Omni Knight and latch onto a more competent carry, which seems like a safe way of doing things.  But someone else picked that exact hero, so I went with Gyrocopter.  This was inspired by watching people play Gyro; my basic idea was "rocket barrage is amazing early on".  This... was confirmed by my play experience.

The very first thing to happen was someone on the other team randoming techies, so I am almost certainly not going to have such an easy time in the future.  I had no lane support but Warlock proved a very competent support in the midgame, putting down good wards and going to town with Aghs ult (which we kind of needed to push into high ground what with the techies).  Also giving me heals.

You misspelled seance.  Are possessing Draignean?  Are you actually a ghost in the shell? You have to tell us if you are, that's the rule

Gyrocopter is still pretty good, yeah. He was hilariously good in 6.84. A lot of heroes were hilariously good that patch. I liked that patch. I like techies, though, which may be part of the reason.

Tried one as support Earthshaker, did pretty well despite some flubs.  For some reason, despite never having one before, I kept thinking my blink dagger would activate on a single press, causing me to Echo Slam nothing.  So that sucked.

He feels pretty powerless in the laning phase.  This may be due to my ally pushing the lane (and for some reason thinking he was going to be solo despite it being a pub and no one calling their positions).  Level one Fissure doesn't do much damage and it doesn't stun for long at all, plus it takes like half of shaker's mana.  He's pretty punchy but he's a melee hero so he has to, well, punch the enemy to do anything.  What's the strategy for contributing as him?  And what's a good starting buy?

1. you should probably put quickcast on on whatever slot you have for blink dagger, seriously, that'll save your life at some point

2. fissure may not stun for long, but you can't discount the blocking

3. starting buy? guides are good, use the book logo up top to get some online guides

If you're just starting out, I recommend you do Limited Heroes; it's an amazing game mode for learning how to play. There's a limited hero pool (fuck off Techies and Invoker) and you can leave at any point without penalty.

ES is good in the laning phase, but he doesn't really shine unless shit is happening; he's not good at harassing, but he's awesome for getting pickoffs and the like (good if your carry has a stun). Use fissure to block the enemy's escape path; tricky to do, but awesome when you manage it. Carryshaker is also hilarious.

Also, what Putnam said: Guides are amazing, and I highly recommend you use them. They help you alot when first figuring out a hero.

The Fall Major begins today! :) https://www.reddit.com/r/DotA2/comments/3sk2s2/the_2015_frankfurt_major_survival_guide/#event

Also I haven't been playing much lately. I can't really adapt to 6.85 - it's a disaster, really. I had a losing streak of 12 games, lost about 300 MMR already and my win percentage is decreasing so fast. I don't know whats up but I guess I'll wait for the next patch. No matter what hero I take, no matter how good or bad I play, I can't seem to win games at the moment. :(

This! And I hate it. The enemy team literally always picks Alchemist or has a good Invoker or both and then my team gets stomped. Nobody ever picks them on my team. Most of the time I get try hard carries that yell "Let me farm and it'll be an easy win, guys" but end up with 2 - 16 or something like that. :(

Continuing newb tales: Tried out Omni.  Everyone called a lane except for Shadow Fiend, who got angry when me and Silencer went top.  Silencer immediately jumped on voice chat defending me saying something about how I'd give Silencer all the heals and it would be beautiful.

We went up against Timbersaw and Undying.  It was the most passive lane I've ever played in any MOBA.  We could't do anything to them, my offensive contribution was basically zero and Silencer's wasn't much better.  But on the other hand they couldn't do anything either.  Any damage to Silencer I just healed up and I eventually gave her both of my clarities because I didn't need them.

When we got to team fighting... holy shit, I can see why Omni has the highest win rate on Dotabuff.  Press R, win battle.  Sadly the SF disconnected (ragequit?) and we were down to 4; we slooowwwwwly lost even though ours would have been the better team if we weren't down.

Pretty sure "pick wr, rush aghs" was prevalent in 6.84 too.

What I like to do when the enemy team firstpicks Alchemist is to pick Doom and watch the game degenerate into a farmfest.

Sometimes I wonder if the game would be better if there just wasn't farming.

Then I remind myself that... Actually it kind of would.
