So playing as (mostly) vanilla DF humans and living above ground with little to no support aside from one random caravan that probably won't make a reappearance isn't a twist?
I thought the arrival of the caravan and the migrants means it just turns to normal DF with humans?

I got an idea just now :o

Make a second town with the new migrants!

Or we could put them to use as cave explorers. With no dwarves or goblins, chances are we'd be the first to tame something from the caverns and build a civilized outpost with a direct access point.

Plus there may be valuable gold and iron ores down there, which let's face it we seriously need (in the case of the iron) once some of the nastier enemies make a move.

We can always melt down items taken from our stronger foes to make better gear.

As I said, make a second town, perhaps the cave humans?

We can always melt down items taken from our stronger foes to make better gear.

Most enemies will come at us with a mix of bronze, copper, and silver with the iron and steel stuff (some enemy officers will come packing that stuff,) so I dunno if the amount of fuel we'd need would make melting worth it. Just finding the ore would probably be better, plus give our fighting men and women some practice when trolls and such decide to poke around the mineshaft.

The resource thing is mostly because since we're humans we pretty much use wood for everything except static fortifications and monuments right?

As I said, make a second town, perhaps the cave humans?

I dunno if we have anywhere to build one where it wouldn't look... Off. I was just gonna drill down and build a small outpost with a few people guarding/exploring it.

We could artificially create the disparity between humans that the nobles were meant to. We lump newcomers into a generic warrior group and get them to train in a lesser way to the current soldiers. No paired squads sparring to make legendary fighters. Brand the current soldiers knights and give them better gear and housing than the grunts, RP in an attempt to resurrect the culture that mankind had once based itself around prior to it's destruction.

Well, I just learned a lesson. Don't arbitrarily pick a spot to start exploratory mining. You get a reacher chasing your head surgeon for your effort.

EDIT: I can put most of the newcomers into an archery squad actually. Can use the leather we got to make some quivers and light armor and I'm sure we can make some passable bows out of wood (to reduce weight and increase rate of fire.)

Other than the shallow tetrahedrite the only metals I expect will be deep down. The embark map said shallow metal and deep metals. So we may find gold, but I doubt there's iron.

So far we've found native copper and tetrhedrite. I'm gonna be pissed if all we got is copper.

If it matters, I think I did make us able to process candy.

We're humans, we don't dig that deep.

Another note is were down what, ~6 z levels? Were not even that deep , we got chances for iron. All else fails, we can have a bronze age

There won't be iron, iron is shallow metal only and we only have one and that's copper. There are multiple deep metals but other than candy which is always there I don't know what they are. If we're lucky there'll be cassiterite somewhere, but we can't bet on it as a surefire thing.

We can use archers to bolster our numbers in combat and the elites all have iron weapons I think.

Eh, we should have Goblinite at some point, so I'm not worried about iron or anything really.
