Roleplaying Troubles.
« on: October 03, 2013, 09:29:47 pm »

I have been having troubles with roleplaying recently. I have had a rather spectacular falling out with my IRC roleplaying group leaving me with this forums roleplaying section. Even though it has it's own merits, RPing in a forum simply doesn't have the fun of RPing in a real-time context, and requires a lot of thought and writing. I want to RP again, which leaves me (From my current standing) with these options.
1. Join the IRC group again. Unlikely. I found that the atmosphere there was a little uptight (I got called a psychopath for not really caring about character death) and I got banned thanks to drama (Though I unbanned myself since I was an admin.) So, after that trainwreck, I'm never going back.
2. Find a roleplaying group IRL. I live in the middle of nowhere, Ireland. To find an RP I would have to go to Dublin, which takes up the whole day. No thanks.
3. GM a group here. A good idea, but a few things against it. I like making my own mechanics and stories in a low-complexity ruleset. I even have my own set of mechanics to constitute a whole game. I'm not sure if this'd be good for most players interested in IRC, since the majority seem to prefer proper rulesets rather then homebrew creations.

So, what do I do?

I've no clue, honestly, though I'll watch this thread so I can maybe RP with some other people than the TA/ROTMG/SA group.
Why?
Because I might find an RP group with no shipping.
*ahem* Anyway, if you want to create a game here, I'm sure there would be some people who would go for it. I'd at least try.

I don't think those groups exist, sorry.

I've witnessed some things in IRC based RP groups that to this day leave me astounded at the level of immaturity and general ridiculousness that can be bred there.  Try not to take it personally, after 3-4 of these ending up that way I'm pretty convinced this is par for the course.

If you can't join a group in person, which I have no experience with but would expect to fare better than an internet group in general, starting a forum game of some sort here or on another RP board is probably your best bet.  I've never participated in a PbP game here, but I've looked at a few and they seem to do alright.  Established game systems seem to do the best, but I've seen a few homebrewed things that looked like they did alright.

One option you might not have considered is running a community fortress of some sort.  It's not the same thing as playing in a traditional RPG, but it's better than nothing.  I'm sure I just got lucky with the first one I ran, but it actually ended up becoming a freeform RP that spawned an IRC group of its own.  The subject matter (ponies) helped I'm sure, but Spearbreakers is an example of an actual dwarf fort that produced a good bit of RPing (from what I gathered glancing through the thread).  Both of my forts ended up in various levels of IRC nuclear warfare at various points of course...

Because I might find an RP group with no shipping.
I don't think those groups exist, sorry.

That matches my experience too.  There is no such thing as innocence, only degrees of guilt.

As I said, I like forum RPing but it doesn't have the same thing as IRC RPs do. However, if it's not impossible for a homebrew game to work, maybe I'll think about starting one.

If you're doing a play-by-post, you're probably best off picking or homebrewing a system that's way simpler than your average RPG. Waiting for people to post slows down the game so much, you'll want to do everything you can to make the game fast and smooth.

I have heard roll20 has a fairly reasonable community supporting it. Not sure though.

I'm in a similar situation, I used to RP a lot in WoW, but the RP communities there have declined and become incredibly insular to the point it's nearly impossible to get into anything unless you already know someone who can tell you about it etc.
Since then I've been playing DnD with a few of my friends, though that hasn't really gone anywhere since our DM is awfully lazy, rather inexperienced and his planning skills are comparable to a dog with ADHD and short term memory loss. I've tried a number of forum roleplaying groups but it just doesn't work for me, my style favours brevity and not spending 20 minutes typing something out and another 20 minutes waiting for someone to respond. I've yet to try any IRC's, really.

You know that you can create a room on IRC on freenode easily, right?

Organize the local players with a time, and a room. There are even web based freenode IRC clients that are free to use for people that dont have one.

It's not the setting up of the IRC that's the problem, I can do that easily. It's just that I'm worried no-one would be interested.

You will never know unless you ask, and the worst that will happen, is that people will decline.

For best results, schedule on a weekend in your pitch.

Don't worry about interest, you only need 3 people and these boards are big.

Also, I know of at least two or three other people who have recently lost their gaming groups and posted about it in the Sad Thread.  You could consider advertising there.
