Joining a religion?

How do you do this.  It says on wiki you can talk to a priest about services and it lets you join, then you can talk to your god:

This doesnt happen for me, they just give me quests

Looks like that information was just copied from the 40d version of the article. As far as I can tell, it's not accurate any more. It's not possible to join a religion.
