So let's say your outnumbered or you know your about to die; what do you do as the last thing you can? EG: throw a sword at an enemy

Don't die - run for it instead. Adventurers are non-refundable.

it depends.

If I'm surrounded: cut off limbs and use necromancer powers to raise them as a distraction as I abscond.

If I know I'm about to die, which means being on the ground with my limbs disabled as a result of upper spine nerves being severed: throw everything I have in defiance and hope I hit someone in the head.

Certain death? Like severed limbs with fountains of blood? Fractured spine with damage to nerves? Teared lungs? All of them when surrounded?

The answer is: BITE THEIR HEADS OFF IN BLOODY ARC!

But if you don't have teeth anymore, then you will surely feel the utmost despair.

Science is always important. But it needs more flaming cats. Can't we build bridge-based catapults and fling flaming cats at the dust and goo?

It's time for the ATHATH Death Counter to increase once more in celebration for the end of the world.

I fight them with everything I have, aiming to dismember and cripple. That way they'll have something to remember me by. If they cripple me, I will fight them with tooth and nail until I am killed. The sole survivor of the bogeyman ambush against my crippled adventurer can tell you; never underestimate the power behind a dwarf's jaws.

I mean, it's not really that hard, is it? Anyone can wield a torch, it doesn't prove anything. Wearing flaming clothes on the other hand, or better yet, wearing nothing at all and being on fire... that is the essence of dwarfish behavior."

If my spine is broken (damn crossbowbandits), I won't even try to survive. Because living with broken spine isn't life worth to live.

If I'm otherwise healthy or have only a minor wounds (missing arm or something like that), as long as I can stand, I'll try to escape. I've found jumping into deep rivers, cliffs or other "certain deaths" pretty amusing, especially when you survive. There are those empty multi z-level rooms in the dungeons - if I meet large bandit group in the up, I usually drop down and escape.

If there is no escape, I'll say let them come and take as many of them with me as I can.

'Tis but a scratch.

Children you rescue shouldn't behave like rabid beasts.  I guess your regular companions shouldn't act like rabid beasts either.
I think that's a little more impossible than I'm likely to have time for.

Try to draw them out and fight them just one at a time, using the terrain to block arrows or at least reduce the likelihood of a hit. Aim to cause debilitating injuries and pain, lop off limbs, only go for headshots when the opportunity presents itself. Had a good adventurer recently, built a decent entourage of solid followers. Got ambushed deep in the wilderness by well-equipped bandits with high levels, wound up the only person left standing. Died, but took all but five with me. And at least three of those five were very soon to be dead, judging by how much they were vomiting and the fact that they couldn't move.

If I've learned anything in all my many last stands, it is that death is never certain, only... extremely likely.

(that's a book quote, but I forget which book)
