Fertilization
« on: August 24, 2006, 12:47:00 pm »

OK, so I've got fields, I've got dwarves who will plant them (or at least parts of them, need to get seeds nearer to field), and I can make potash.  But I'm not sure, do I fertilize the field before I plant it, or can both be done at once?  Do I need to refertilize every season?  Should I just click on the auto-fertilize thing and not worry about it?

Fertilising will override any planting order you gave, so you have to get that done first. The 0/4 or whatever number indicates how fertilised the plot is, and I think that degrades over time. It doesn't all disappear suddenly as the season changes or anything.

Unless it was changed in the last few versions, it does drop to 0 as soon as the season changes. So don't waste time fertilizing late in the season.

It doesn't matter if the field is planted or not when you fertilize; it just matters how high the fertilization is when the seed sprouts. I recommend against using the auto-fertilization bit, unless you're sure you can produce enough potash to keep all your fields covered every season; I prefer concentrating my fertilizer on one or two plots.

Sorry for the necro, but I just fertilized a field and the fertilization is at 3/3 even into the next season.  I grew two full rounds of plump helmets on it, to boot.  It seems that fertilizer does persist across seasons.  I wonder how quickly and what the consumption of fertilizer looks like (so I know how to key up my potash production.)

Anyone have more data on this?

2006 was enough versions ago that none of the info from then is any good anymore.  Crops also will no longer wither in the fields instantly at the end of the year, nor when the season changes to one it can't be planted in.

You should start a new thread with your question, maybe.

Most recent/relevant hit on my search. :P

Would a mod lock this thread?  (What's a post from 2 years ago still even doing on here?)

There are three things I know about dwarves:
1. They've got beards. Even the women.
2. They're short. Especially the women.
3. They're Scottish.
