How do I push myself to do anything?
« on: October 01, 2013, 07:08:14 pm »

Right now, I spend most of my time online. Like, wake up, maybe go for a walk, stay in my room all day, 12 hours later I go back to sleep, maybe eating a meal and a snack or two.

I need to finish high school, 7 credits left, before June if I want a hope of getting into university next September. But, not only do I need to actually do work at home, I need to learn -how- to do homework at all. Esp. if I want to do university.

It's not even that hard! I'm in an independent learning program, where school work and homework is one and the same, a 4-5 booklets of 5-4 lessons, 20 in total, and whether you do it at the school or at home, it's the same work.

I can -do- the work. I can't -start- doing the work. Ye ken?

This also applies to looking for jobs and other things.

I'm basically in a really comfortable rut that is actually working out for me, I only exercise a few times a week (biking to school) but I'm still losing weight at a comfortable pace, and I am learning things online. But "I learned that online!" does not a high-school credit make, and I can't learn neuroscience or psychology online so I need to go to university.

So yeah...

Have you considered depression?

Have you considered smashing your pc?

Have you considered disconnecting your internet?

Have you considered having your parent and/or guardian MAKE you do the work?

Honestly, without any intention to offend, it sounds like you just need to pony up here. This can't go on forever or you'll most likely end up miserable in a deadbeat job.

If none of the above appeals, have you thought of some good reasons why you SHOULD do the work? Do that and hold on to, and just internally repeat to yourself "This is for <<person/thing/goal>>"

EDIT: I know it can be pretty hard to do the work sometimes, it's something I struggled with a lot in my earlier high school years, but once you get going it's remarkably easy to continue. SO, case in point: just do it.

Conscious effort. Force yourself to do it. Don't procrastinate. Don't think about withholding x or y until later.

Do it.

Focus on the feelings of satisfaction and relief that follow successful accomplishment. Feed off of that emotion. Make it your addiction. Crave it until you go after it, and things will only get easier.

To cover the looking for jobs bit of your post, this is what my parents told me.
"Sure, getting a job sucks, but when you get your first paycheck, you'll realize all the awesome stuff you can buy while you mooch off us and don't pay rent."

EDIT: IN OTHER WORDS: The capability to buy awesome stuff is a nice motivator.

Make a schedule and stick to it.
Helped me tremendously in the past.

I have found that the one way is to just start doing the thing. Which seems like a non-answer but that's because it is. Just start, even if half-heartedly, like you were just gonna take a look and do something else in a minute. You might just find yourself doing it for real. Do whatever mental gymnastics you have to in order to just get your eyes looking at the thing you are supposed to be doing.

Least it works for me. The other option is to have a schedule and stick to it, like Helgoland said.

You gotta turn your addiction into your reward. The internet, games, forums, ect.... are your reward for doing what you need to do. Haven't done your shit yet? Internet is not a possibility until you do.

And like MSH said, you'll find eventually that getting your shit done also comes with its own sense of accomplishment, which biochemically is another reward.

A bit of an update. On the second I had trouble sleeping because I was terrified that I wouldn't be able to finish before June. I came upon an idea, or rather realization, that I -had- to do 1 lesson a day (20 lessons per course) if I wanted a hope in hell of finishing. So since then, I've been doing that. It took me a month to get through 1 lesson, and I've done 2 more in the last two days.

So it seems that helped, the realization. Plus what MetalSlimeHunt said.

Personally, I find that about ~70% of procrastination comes from not taking care of yourself. Make sure you get enough sleep, enough food (glucose is vital to the brain!). Then lesser things like having a shower, getting exercise, aren't burnt out, and so on. The Sims actually simulates this well.

Then go for the Pomodoro technique. Focus on something intently for 25-45 minutes and take a break. If you're tempted to waste time online or whatever procrastination, just write down that interruption somewhere and handle it after your focused 25-45 minutes. I find 25 minutes to be best for boring straightforward tasks like data entry or math homework... 45 for complex, creative tasks like programming or writing.

Also what I do is log on to forums only in incognito mode, so I have to enter username/password every time. Keeps me from wasting time replying on trivial stuff.

While I too find myself wonder what, I have found then when I get into those situations either taking a nap or a few runs of a roguelike akin to Nethack or DC:SS get me occupied enough to actually do something.

Maybe it's the mental stimulation, maaaaybe I'm just weird. Either way, I hope this has helped, even if only a little.
