If you cast the back of the throne to have an odd numbered depth, instead of the eight squares it seems to be know, it should be pretty easy to carve a few spikes into the top of it, as you would be left with a single square at the highest point to put a ramp.

Really cool design through. I've never really done any mega projects like this, but I might have to give it a try now.

Make the mug steel with a golden handle. Add spikes and blood and bones.

Okay, now with AXE!

If platinum is available I'll use that for the material, otherwise it will be steel as well.

I think I'll hold off on adding a shield or any other wargear for now, but I can always add those in later.

I'm going to poke at the the back of the throne as well as the concept of a crown now. We'll see if I can come up with something that looks good and isn't too fiddly.

I'd like to open discussion on LOCATION now. What would an embark site for all this need? What biome would be best? What generation setting should be considered besides max height?

I'm thinking that ideally what's needed is:
  • Volcano (To save the effort of pumping from the sea)
  • Flux
  • Enough water to cast obsidian
  • Accessible by all races

Well, you did leave out evil, neutral, or good. Rather major item since it does determine how much fun you might have constructing the statue. An evil biome with a zombifying rain would make for a rather ... interesting ... construction effort. As for how much sky there is above the ground, using dfhack and using the infiniteSky command will allow you to build up as high as you could possibly desire. So the real point is to generate a world with lots of volcanoes and minerals to actually build it. Don't worry about the sky. Just let it grow as the statue does.  With that said, I tend to enjoy worlds generated with these parameters... (LOTS of volcanoes and a pretty good mix of good and evil biomes, plus lots of room between the surface and the 1st cavern. Not to mention a lot of minerals.)

I don't think I need DFHACK for the the vertical limit, last time I just set [LEVELS_ABOVE_GROUND:100]

As for the alignment of the biome, I'd prefer to stay away from evil. This is going to take long enough without the local weather killing the construction workers. I may even disable invasions until the casting has started, since working out a 100z level double pumpstack will be a bitch.

Has the embark site finder improved to the point where I can search for a site with volcano + flux?

No idea, don't think so. However, if you crank up the volcanism, you'll get marble pretty much everywhere. DFhacks prospect tool is also of great help. It's a lot easier to just manually look around at volcanoes, find a site you like, and use prospect all to see what is there.

Okay, I've been working on the back of the throne, and have done the sides in separate styles. I need opinions on which looks better here, I've been looking at it too long to judge.

The right side is using 1x3 sword-like spikes that I alternate through the 2nd, 4th, and 6th rows so their bases don't connect to eachother.

The left side and top is using my best attempt at cone-like spikes.

I've decided to put off any efforts to add a crown, or mess with the materials of the accessories until after things are started. After the spikes are done, unless someone sees something glaringly bad I'm going to call the basic design done and start planning implementation (Location, Techniques, Mods).

Spikes look way better, in my opinion.

Which spikes?

I think the cones are good, it also kind of invokes flame symbolism.

Perhaps you should put it within a day's travel of civilization, and have a guest house on the surface near the edge of the map, in case you want to visit it later in adventure mode. Travelling at night as an adventurer can get painful.

Unless you set bogeymen population to 0 in advanced worldgen.

Cone spikes. Definitely cone spikes.

On the topic of the axe: I think it would look better if it was tilted and leaning against the throne, although that would require diagonal construction and so could easily be more of a pain in the ass than it's worth.

Ok I think this is the final design, touched up the spikes to make them all 3D and added lean to the axe shaft so it touches the throne.

So unless anyone has some final input on the design I think what's left to talk about is just location, implementation, and mods.

Hnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn no the axe looked better before. What I was imagining is something like this sword (only with an axe):
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A really visible tilt, down to the axeblade. Which, in block-pixels like you're stuck with here, is a recipe for cave-ins, sooo maybe not. It'd probably require a major adjustment to the formation of the axe, but it'd look so cool... (an axe-stand?)
