This time before I start a megaproject I'm planning the damn thing in advance, but I'd like to get some opinions before I finalize this and launch the project.

In short I'm going to take a shot at building an Avatar of Armok out of the corpses of the dead, converted into blocks.

Here's the current design, the discussion now is about how and where to implement this monstrosity.

Here's the design so far:

Black is Obsidian, Light Grey is blocks of bone, Dark Grey will be metal, and Gold is Gold

I'm looking for general input on design (I can get more detailed shots if needed, or supply the modeling files), and specifically:
  • Should there be a beard? If so what the hell should it be made of since obsidian is already being used?
  • The hands and feet are covered because they were hard to model at this scale, should I add in any other armor / jewelry?
  • What should I do with the left hand? I'm thinking a mug/goblet full of magma, or grabbing the handle of a hammer/axe resting against the base of the throne.
  • The hell should I do to make the teeth stand out? The gold's there to mark them as teeth to the casual observer... I'd love some suggestions on the entire skull area.

I'll take any advice on design, construction techniques, or modding, or anything really. After I get this finalized and get the base fortress at a sustainable level I'll start an official thread (and a time-lapse), for now this is just planning.

Two things, first make sure you have enough z-levels up in your map. Second go for goblet with magma... pouring endlessly from it all over ground, mwahahahahahahahahaaaaaa!

The beard should be red of some sort, methinks. Because it's running with the blood of the elves Armok eats for breakfast.

It is well-known that Armok's beard is made of adamantine, and that the adamantine spires are Armok's whiskers. There are tricks for duplicating metal if you don't have enough on your map.

To make the teeth stand out, I'd stain them with the blood of your first-born sons. Armok demands no less.

I second the adamantine beard. Remember to use bars, not blocks, to simulate the whiskers.

I also second the mug of magma. Though it should probably be still, rather than pouring, to keep the plumbing from messing up the sculpture.

...Though you could construct a pitcher up above pouring magma into his mug, which is therefore constantly foaming over. That would be awesome.

My chief concern with adamantine is that it's bright blue. It'll come out looking like some horrific reverse papa smurf...

As for coloring the teeth with blood; I guess I could make a separate material to represent it and put in a reaction for it that takes a block and a barrel of blood. Should the gold ones be removed in this case?

First, I second candy whiskers and the sheer dorfiness of this plan.
Second, what is that program?

The program is VoxCad: http://www.voxcad.com/

It's a Voxel Modeling program and while it's not the best one out there, it's free. I saw several other more professional looking ones when I was searching, but didn't have the patience to try and pirate them.

The hand looks fine actually.

For the eyes, put in glass windows (or blocks) and then pour magma into the sockets.

For the teeth, hm, if diamond were a material you can build with, I might say diamond. Though you could hash out some sort of reaction.

Also needs a few neck vertebrae I think.

In response to the beard, teeth, neck and eyes requests here's the updated version.

This is with a free hanging, medium sized beard. It'd be harder to drape it over the ribs, but possible.

If I leave the teeth as blood covered, I'm probably going to reduce the red levels a fair bit, so it's just a faint tinge.. right now it looks silly.

The neck has been extended, and the eyes are glassed in magma.

If you wanted the beard brown you could use wood. You could also give the chair more texture. Or build a fort inside the chair.

After everything comes online the main body of the fort will be inside the chair, I don't intend to fill it. As for texturing, I'll take suggestions but the resolution is rather low to do anything super fancy. My only plan was to leave the scaffolding up after I erected it and engrave the entire surface as a final step.

You could just stain the teeth with blood, rather than make them out of blood. Just sacrifice a few children on them. You don't have to cover every tooth, but make sure to splash some blood on the beard, too.

I don't have a problem with the beard inside the ribcage, but the angle of that shot brings out an issue I couldn't see before. The sternum really ought to curve inward at the top, so it's not so far from the neck. If you do that, draping the beard in front of the ribcage will be more natural, too.

You could inlay an image one block deep on the sides and back of the chair.  ;D
