Dwarf Labor --> Mechanical Power
« on: September 29, 2013, 08:03:25 pm »

You know what would be awesome? If there was something, say, a handcranking device, that would allow a dwarf to be stationed and create power. Not only that, but children would be able to be assigned to them, thus making them useful. Seriously, I have 6 children in my fort, and I put them on a drawbridge and pulled the lever, and they didn't even launch! They just got broken shoulders.

What do you think? Commited dwarf power creation?

Sounds like a really unreliable energy source.
You would need to consider a dwarf leaving the job whenever he eats, drinks, sleeps or takes a break.
Also the amount of energy produced most likely should depend on strength and skill of the worker,
which make planning a dwarf-powered mechanism even harder.

Same thing applies to screw pumps, right? But they usually pump consistently, don't they?

While dwarves could be used for generating power, there's a much more elegant and superior solution to the issue. Animal engines. While I'm certain I've read FotF replies discussing the matter I can't seem to find them, only quotes of other people discussing said replies. Anyway, this will probably be implemented whenever haymaking is worked out to be able to feed work animals for uses such as this. And if desperate it should be easy to designate a dwarf to pull the machine temporarily instead.

Dozens of little wheels, all powered by cavies. I can see it now...

You can't use children for animal engines.

So make animal engines powerable by children.

IMO, when the improved mechanics stuff comes in one of the first changes should be to swap out the pump-operator skill for something like a "crank operator" skill, and bring in cranks, treadwheels, animal engines and so forth to go with elevators, powered drawbridges and any other things of that sort.
