Moreover, the National Guard or Army setting up camps (probably administered by FEMA and/or CDC) and relocating people into it would probably fulfill every gun-toting militia nut's dystopian fantasy, and trigger an armed backlash.

And not entirely without reason. If you're healthy, but you're being told that because you live in a city/town with someone suspected of Ebola, you have to go to the camp too....there's a lot of people who are going to try and flee/fight their way out of that, even without the feverish conspiracy dreams.

Yeah, come to think of that, someone would probably start to shoot suspected infected in the face to reduce the threat. And, well... witchhunts.

Considering that Ebola is a pretty low-tier disease when it comes to being a pandemic threat, I think presuming any attempt to mass reclocate people to concentration camps is malicious is completely reasonable.

I dunno, we don't have armed uprisings every time a hurricane rolls around and they have to evacuate. People aren't usually forced by the government to evacuate because of a hurricane.

Maybe that's not a great analogy.

It kind of figures that so many people are being infected at the moment. Hospitals are understaffed and the locals are actively undermining existing efforts to help them because of misinformation. What the actual fuck is the world doing not helping these people?

I'm satisfied with the WHO and USAID response, though I suppose some other orgs could stand to take an active role. The simple fact is that this strain of Ebola is in the sweet spot of infectivity and lethality, and West Africa has some of the single worst health systems in the world, combined with a number of local traditions that just so happen to be excellent for getting infected with things. It's a perfect storm.

More like not helping them enough.

It's also only a matter of time before ebola reaches the bigger cities like Lagos.

The whole locals not cooperating part is likely a mix of factors from local superstition, mistrust in authorities, and misinformation or misunderstanding.

I think people realize that this has the potential to be much worse then any previous virus scares. The thing I find most worrying is both the mortality rate as well as who it kills. The flu killing 50,000 people a year isn't that big a deal largely because those people weren't healthy to begin with. If ebola continues to spread like it is we're going to see a massive amount of fatalities. We're lucky because it hasn't happened yet and we might be able to stop it before it goes crazy exponential on us.

Well, not only that, flu mutate very quickly. There is a reason while you need a different vaccine every year. And because it mutates so quicklly, a vaccine will not offer such a good protection.

Cuba already sent over 160 doctors and medical personnel to West Africa too. But of course, no one report on that because Cuba never gets any love.
