They're mostly just MMOs.

If you find them fun, I'd recommend Spiral Knights.

Warthunder - A fun aircombat game.

Startrek online - OK in my book (mostly for the ship combat because ground is boring like hell).

Mabinogi - A nice sandboxy MMO but it acts odd on my PC and Nexon does fxxx all to make it at least a bit compatible with Steam.

Dota 2 - If you like that sort of thing.

Warframe - Didn't play it personally but there is a thread someonere on the forums that's more in deapth... and it's free so try it if you want.

Planetside 2 - Fun mass FPS with vehicles... no less no more.

Airmech - A dota like thing with transforming mecha... there is a thread somewhere about it. I bumped it recently but i guess noone gave a care... anyway raptr organised a giveaway of some stuff for registering with them so now might be a good time to start.

Spiral Knights - A dungeoncrawly cutesy hack and slash game... didn'tp lay it all that much but i know it has a mostly item based progression.

And a ton of MMORPGs in just about every setting imaginable.

Mabinogi. We have a huge thread full of people willing to help and answer questions, and a guild with plenty of crafters making piles of nice gear just for it to go to waste.

There's also Combat Arms, but I really don't recommend it unless you can stand a community that makes the official Minecraft forums seem like a nice place to be. It also gets very competitive around Sergeant rank, so you need to play often and be pretty good at it.

EDIT: To clarify, Mabinogi is an anime-style MMORPG with surprisingly intense combat, and Combat Arms is the most generic military shooter in existence. It's also worth mentioning that CA has run at nice speeds on every computer I've tried to play on (i.e. $200 piece of crap towers), so there's that angle.

The OP mentioned it, so...

EDIT: Alien Swarm is pretty fun if you have friends, but i dunno how many people play nowadays.

Realm of the Mad God is an interesting little browser-based (kinda) game, a multiplayer bullet hell with permadeath. (correct me if I'm wrong I haven't played it much)

Mainly MMOs as others have said. Unless you're playing with friends or Bay12, then you might end up like me. Which is spend a good 30-40 hours on an MMO until you realize "What the hell am I doing." Although there are threads for a bunch of them with Bay12, so if you can play often then I recommend to play with them.

Yeah, as others have mentioned, nearly all free games on Steam are MMOs. I can't even think of any non-MMOs.

Actual free games that aren't just Free2Play include Peggle Extreme, Codename Gordon, Alien Swarm, a range of sourcemods and Half Life 2: Lost Coast. There might be more but I've long since forgotten.

Dwarfs! has a free-to-play version that you can add paid DLC to. That's the only one that really stands out to me.
